The U.S. Capitol Police are investigating threatening emails against Rep. Trey Gowdy, the South Carolina Republican recently tapped to lead a special panel probing the Benghazi terrorist attacks. The investigation comes after POLITICO reporters and journalists at other outlets received two emails on Tuesday warning that Gowdy would be harmed because of his role in investigating the 2012 attacks.

Good luck with that. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi faces pressure from all sides in regard to the newly-launched select committee to investigate Benghazi. Participating would legitimize the results, while boycotting it might open up Democrats to attacks on their concern for diplomatic personnel abroad, four of whom were killed in the attack on September 11, 2012, and leave administration officials no way to set the narrative through the friendly questioning of Democrats on the panel during public hearings. Pelosi hedged in the direction of participation by demanding an equal number of seats on the committee:

Politico reporters and journalists at other news outlets say they’ve received at least two emails that threaten harm to Mr. Gowdy due directly to his leading role on the panel. Capitol Police refused to comment on the actual threats, except to say that “an active, open investigation” has been launched, Politico reported.

Late yesterday House Speaker John Boehner announced the new Benghazi select committee will include seven Republicans and five Democrats. Because Republicans are the majority party in the House, they have also been appointed the majority on the committee. Before the partisan count was announced, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi demanded the committee be split evenly between Republicans and Democrats, despite giving very little attention to Republicans during her time as Speaker in the majority. Gowdy breaks the mold for chairman of a big ticket investigative committee. The typical chairman is a stern but somewhat subdued father figure — think Sen. Inouye of Iran Contra fame — or a venerable, or at least folksy, grandfather figure — think Sen. Ervin of Watergate fame. The old-fashioned chairman may press witnesses, but will leave the true attack dog stuff to counsel or colleagues. Gowdy won’t cut it as a father or grandfather figure and he will be neither subdued nor folksy. He will likely be his own attack dog.

Just minutes ago, the world was informed that a Select Committee investigation on Benghazi has finally been announced. This will bypass Barack Obama, Eric Holder, and will likely lead to the impeachment of Barack Obama and the end of Hillary Clinton’s career. The only question is why this hadn’t been done sooner.
