California's sea otters have struggled for years with diseases, parasites and even the occasional collision with boats. But now the fuzzy coastal mascots are increasingly facing another threat: shark attacks. It's difficult to say that white shark numbers are increasing. Last year, the first comprehensive study of the number of white sharks off the California coast estimated there are 219, fewer than previously thought. Block said other species of sharks, including sevengills and makos, might also be attacking otters. She said having a population of large predators is healthy for any ecosystem, and that more research is needed before...

So i'm at the game last night- starting my 31st consecutive season attending every Jets home game- and in the middle of the ceremonies they announce, "here for the coin flip, the 43rd POTUS, George" i jump out of my seat and begin yelling "yeh W!!! yeh W!!!" (sadly i must've looked like my 8YO daughter at a Justin Bieber concert)...I heard a large roar from most of the stadium- a few boos, though that's when he was talking to Romo...even later, in the 2nd half when they showed the clips, one of GWB walking to midfield there was applause...

Aerospace industry tells Obama to cool it on bashing corporate jets By Keith Laing - 06/30/11 10:16 AM ET President Obama went over the top in his criticism of tax breaks for corporate jet owners, a lobbying group said Thursday. "We're disturbed by President Obama's remarks on business aviation," Aerospace Industries Association President Marion Blakey said in a statement. "General aviation plays an important role in our economy and took a substantial hit in the recent recession," she continued. "We feel that disparaging comments from the president regarding business jet users are not conducive to promoting jobs, investment and economic...

FLASHBACK from 2009- WASHINGTON -- Just a few months after lawmakers scolded auto executives for flying to Washington in private jets, Congress approved a tax break in the stimulus package to help businesses buy their own planes. The incentive -- first used to help plane makers recover from the 2001 terror attacks -- sharply reduces the up front tax bill for companies who buy assets like business planes. The aviation industry, which is cutting jobs as it suffers from declining shipments and canceled orders, hopes the tax break in the economic-stimulus bill just signed by President Barack Obama will persuade...

Buckle your seat belts low and tight, America, there’s going to be turbulence all the way to Election Day, 2012. It’s only the summer of 2011 and already we have kids vs. corporate jets, courtesy of the White House political machine. The most newsworthy bit of President Obama’s press conference certainly had nothing to do with economics or America’s precarious fiscal position. Recall: The president’s most recent budget plan would add $9.5 trillion in cumulative new debt over the next decade. Eliminating a tax break for the purchase of corporate jets – it’s called “accelerated depreciation” and Obama has endorsed...

Mention has been made about President Obama’s casting of corporate jet owners as villains in yesterday’s press conference. Clearly, he feels strongly about it, as he called them out specifically half a dozen times. This vilification is especially rich, coming as it does from the man who regularly rides what is likely considered to be the most expensive “corporate jet” in the world. And of course we shouldn’t forget that the “tax breaks” for those dastardly corporate jet owners came right from his own Stimulus plan which failed so spectacularly… But let’s take a look at the “corporate jet” part...

Obama dives into debt talksBy Stephen Collinson | AFP – Mon, Jun 27, 2011 The White House accused Republicans of siding with billionaires and private jet owners, as President Barack Obama waded into political talks designed to avert a "calamitous" US debt default. Obama met the top Democrat in the Senate and his minority Republican counterpart, seeking to unpick a deadlock over his call on lawmakers to lift the $14.29 trillion debt ceiling by an August 2 deadline. As political tensions rose, the White House warned of "calamitous" consequences to the global economy if the talks do not seal an...

Stellar sprinklers may help irrigate cosmos, study suggests.Seven hundred and fifty light-years from Earth, a young, sunlike star has been found with jets that blast epic quantities of water into interstellar space, shooting out droplets that move faster than a speeding bullet. The discovery suggests that protostars may be seeding the universe with water. These stellar embryos shoot jets of material from their north and south poles as their growth is fed by infalling dust that circles the bodies in vast disks. "If we picture these jets as giant hoses and the water droplets as bullets, the amount shooting out...

In his first extended public apperance since getting out of prison, Plaxico Burress announced Monday in New York City that he has partnered with the National Urban League and the Brady Center to combat gun violence. “I want to see every child have a chance to succeed. I have an opportunity to make a difference,” Burress said via the New York Post. Quickly rehabbing his public image with a partnership like this is a page taken directly out of the Michael Vick playbook. So is the news Monday that Tony Dungy will serve as a mentor to Vick. Magic Johnson...

Around 12:45 a.m. on Thursday April 14, 2011 (in the wee hours today), my husband and I awoke to hear major (military) jet rumblings over D.C. or nearby. It reminded us of the strange-sounding reverberations we hear at the annual air show. It came in two subsequent periods. The first one lasted probably no more than 3-5 minutes. I'm a bad judge of how long it lasted when I can't see a clock (after I initially checked the time) and when it is a startling event. Anyway, it was a significant period, and not just a flyover -- which we...

She's in high school and dating the star quarterback -- of the Jets! Superstar Gang Green play caller Mark Sanchez "hooked up" in his New Jersey home last month with a striking 17-year-old Connecticut high-school girl -- whose preppy dad is a super-wealthy financier, a bombshell new report claims. Sexy rich girl Eliza Kruger not only bragged on Facebook about "MARK F--ING SANCHEZ" texting her after they flirted at a hip Manhattan nightclub on New Year's Eve -- she also took photos of a mussed-up bed in his boudoir as "proof" of their huddle just days later. "We went back...

When you talk big, you'd better back it up. And if you back up the big talk, you deserve to celebrate even bigger. That wasn't a problem for the New York Jets during and after the team's decisive 28-21 victory over the New England Patriots in the AFC divisional playoff. A bit of the celebration didn't please CBS announcer Jim Nantz, though. After Shonn Greene(notes) scored a late game-sealing touchdown, many Jets, Rex Ryan included, converged in the end zone to whoop it up and send one final message to the Patriots and their fans. Nantz didn't like this, particulary...

Halftime: You can hear the boos from the press box as the Patriots shuffle off the field at the end of a disappointing first half. Before the misery ended, Logan Mankins shoved Jets cornerback Marquice Cole and picked up a personal foul penalty.
