A French crew has begun to repair two undersea cables in the Mediterranean that were severed on Friday, disrupting internet and phone communications. A robot submarine will locate the ends of the cables on the sea bed and bring them to the surface to be re-connected. They were cut somewhere between Sicily and Tunisia, probably by an anchor. Police say that a 22-year-old sailor on duty aboard a submarine at Electric Boat has died from an apparent gunshot wound. Due to federal jurisdiction, the investigation has been taken over by the local office of the Naval Criminal Investigation Service. The name of the victim nor the circumstances of the shooting have not been released.

Emergency crews responded to a three-alarm fire early Tuesday morning at Penn Station, according to the FDNY. The fire happened just before 2:30 a.m. at the station, located at West 33rd Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan, the FDNY said.
