Former Subway sandwich chain pitchman Jared Fogle pleaded guilty in federal court on Wednesday to charges of child pornography and traveling for illicit paid sex with minors. Federal Judge Mark Dinsmore must now review a plea deal Fogle’s attorneys reached with prosecutors and decide whether to accept it. Fogle was released and must wear an electronic monitoring device pending his next court appearance. Under the deal, Fogle would serve between five and 12 years in prison, pay $1.4 million in restitution to 14 minor victims, register as a sex offender and meet other conditions.

Indiana is known for its targeting of truckers relative to the behavioral aspects of on-highway safety — no state devotes a larger share of its focus to ticketing and issuing warnings to drivers for moving-type violations. When officials in the northern part of the state in late June announced a weeklong “Operation Truck Stop” three-county enforcement effort during the July 4 holiday week along U.S. 20, a common Indiana Toll Road alternate, in late June, regular readers could have been forgiven for seeing little news there. As Overdrive‘s reports on the state made clear in the last year, such efforts...

A new Indiana law requires that abortion clinics dispose of fetal remains properly or give the mother a chance to bury her baby. Gov. Mike Pence Monday held a ceremonial signing of an "aborted fetal remains" bill (SB 329), which establishes rules as to how abortion facilities must dispose of aborted babies and allows the pregnant woman to choose a different method at her own expense (burial or cremation).  According to testimony, the Indianapolis Planned Parenthood facility was disposing of aborted babies down a drain into the sewer system. The legislation was authored by Sen. Liz Brown (R-Fort Wayne). The bill was...

Indianapolis police fatally shot a "troubled" 15-year-old boy who evaded officers at a traffic stop and accelerated toward them in a car that matched the description of one that had been reported carjacked, the city's assistant police chief said Monday. Three officers opened fire Sunday night on the carjacking suspect, identified by the local coroner's office as Andre Green, because they felt threatened as he accelerated the car toward them, said Assistant Police Chief Lloyd Crowe. [Snip] Green pleaded guilty in May to juvenile charges of auto theft and criminal mischief, court records show. According to Marion County juvenile court...

Three more states—Alabama, Louisiana, and New Hampshire—have cut off state funding to Planned Parenthood (PP) in the wake of recent videos released by the Center for Medical Progress that appear to show PP officials negotiating over the sale of aborted baby organs and tissue. The three are the latest states to defund the nation’s largest abortion provider. Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker ended state funding of abortion-performing facilities, including Planned Parenthood, in 2011. According to LifeSiteNews, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Indiana, Ohio, and Texas also prohibit state funds from going to any facility that performs abortions. …

Michigan-based Meijer, which began the supercenter combination of a general merchandise store and a supermarket in 1962, began its expansion into Wisconsin in late June, and officially opened its second wave of Wisconsin stores today. As is often the case with new stores, Meijer is holding a “grand opening” sale. Enter the heavy hand of government. From the MacIver News Service: Likely in an attempt to break into the new market, Meijer is allegedly advertising and selling products for less than cost. In Wisconsin, however, that practice is illegal under the Unfair Sales Act – also known as the minimum...

The final lineup for Thursday’s debate is nearly set, as well as the five o’clock &#F8220;pregame show” with the poorly performing candidates, and Mark Everson is objecting to the fact that he doesn’t seem to be included at all. In fact, he has written a letter to Fox News to complain about it. Wait a minute… Mark who?Yes, he’s a declared candidate for the presidency who has filed all the required paperwork. But just to be fully honest here, I do this for a living and I had to Google the guy. He declared back in March and has...

‘A safe space for those people who feel they need it’ One of the most gay-friendly universities in the country is becoming even friendlier, by offering to shelter its LGBTQ students from the rest of the school. Indiana University-Bloomington is opening a “thematic residence hall” this fall for students who don’t identify as straight men or women. It will have a particular emphasis on transgender students and those who don’t “subscribe to conventional gender distinctions,” the Herald-Times reported, citing GLBT Student Support Services Office Coordinator Doug Bauder. IU’s Residential Programs & Services (RPS) is less specific than Bauder. It says...

Indiana on Thursday cleared Planned Parenthood facilities that perform abortions in the state of any wrongdoing in the handling of fetal tissue. Gov. Mike Pence, a Republican, on July 16 ordered an investigation of Planned Parenthood facilities in Indianapolis, Bloomington and Merrillville to see if organs from aborted fetuses were being sold. He was among a number of conservative lawmakers around the country who have called for investigations after an anti-abortion group circulated a video it made secretly showing some of its national officials discussing how they obtain organs from aborted fetuses for research. INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (July 28, 2015) – A pro-life group is organizing rallies across the country Tuesday to spur an investigation into Planned Parenthood. Students for Life for America cites the recently released undercover video showing a Planned Parenthood executive discussing fetal organ donation as the motivation for events. While the pro-life group accuses Planned Parenthood of profiting from fetal organ donation, Planned Parenthood says they are only reimbursed for the expenses that come with the practice. The now viral undercover video, posted by a pro-life group called the Center for Medical Progress, showed a Planned Parenthood official discussing the harvesting...

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker joined the crowded field of Republican contenders vying for the White House in 2016 on Monday, and immediately stands out for having one of the poorest records on environmental and climate issues, according to green groups and political experts. Since taking office in 2010, Walker has dismantled several longstanding policies protecting wetlands and waterways, fast-tracked mining projects, fought climate action, slashed funding for dozens of state scientists and environmental education positions, and impeded development of wind energy in Wisconsin.
