An exceptional ice-cream sundae isn’t a DIY mess of toppings and sauces; it’s a single composed dish that highlights a careful mix of textures and flavors. (Also, sticking with tradition, a sundae involves hard ice cream, not soft serve.) In updating last year’s ranking, we’ve decided to include restaurant sundaes as well as those found at ice-cream parlors. Some are brand-new creations, and others are old, nostalgic favorites, but no matter where they’re served, they’re the absolute best ice-cream sundaes in the whole city. The Absolute Best 1. A weeklong series dedicated to exploring everything that’s happening in the world of ice cream right now. Instagram killed the ice-cream cup. The giant, dripping ice-cream cone is the status food-photo of the summer. You know the shot — piled high with as many scoops as gravity will allow, held out by a disembodied hand, as just-melting ice-cream dribbles barely hang on. Always in a cone. These days, the demand for cones is so high that there’s even a start-up devoted to them, the Konery, which sells “premium, artisanal” waffle cones in psychedelic colors and flavors — like red velvet,...

Manhattan ice cream shop La Newyorkina has introduced what may be the most unique sundae the city has to offer. The Greenwich Village Mexican ice cream and paleta shop tops its new Happy-Hoppy Sundae with chili-coated, crunchy grasshoppers. The interesting insect topping is paired with Mexican vanilla ice cream that has a hint of chili, mezcal infused caramel sauce and a candied orange slice. The spicy, sweet and salty flavors seem like they would be palatable, if you can get past the fact that you are eating a dead bug. Mike Chau, a blogger based in New York, tried the...

Kosher ice cream lovers have a lot to celebrate this Pride month, specifically in the form of a pint of Big Gay Ice Cream. That’s because when the ice cream truck-turned-brick-and-mortar shop decided to package its popular soft serve to be sold nationally, it sought and received kosher certification. The pints of soft-serve deliciousness, which debuted in March and are sold in grocery stores and online, are officially under the auspices of the kashrut division of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America. Or, as it is colloquially known, the OU. While it’s understandable that an up-and-coming brand would...

When Gillie Houston first tried the trendy, low-cal ice cream Halo Top, the experience was “life-changing.” An entire pint has as little as 240 calories — compared to about 1,000 in your average container of Ben & Jerry’s — and, some say, tastes as good as a non-diet dessert. “I think there’s some kind of witchcraft or sorcery involved in the making of it,” says Houston, 24, a writer who lives in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens and has a food-centric Instagram account, @gilliehouston, with more than 101,000 followers.

"So this dominance thing extends to desserts, too?" When did CNN cease to be a serious news organization and become a clown act? I’m not asking you to trace the beginnings of their liberal bias here. That was probably there from the beginning, and you can have a liberal bias and still be a reasonably serious source of news reporting. At one time, that’s what CNN was. But it fell from that perch at some point. When was it? Was it the moment in a presidential debate when Wolf Blitzer asked the candidates to play “This or That”? Was it...

CNN devoted not one, but two segments on how President Trump got two scoops of ice cream while his dinner guests only got one as the network tried to pass off a “scoop” about the president’s eating habits as news. In a segment titled, “Two scoops for Trump,” CNN’s Jeanne Moos talks about Trump’s “executive privilege” for receiving two scoops of ice cream while the three TIME magazine correspondents he had dinner with only got one. “At the dessert course, he gets two scoops of vanilla ice cream with his chocolate cream pie, instead of the single scoop for everyone...

RUSH: I told you yesterday to stop watching the media, that you are not getting an accurate picture. The media’s not even doing what they’re doing… (sigh) Well, it’s a bit of a stretch to say they’re not doing it for national consumption; they, of course, are. But it is really inside-the-Beltway here, because that’s where power is in their minds and that’s where any effective change they want will take place. So the primary objective of the Drive-By Media is to flood the zone in the nation’s capital with this never-ending badgering of “Trump out of control,” “White House...

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump is living every child's dream: More ice cream. According to an extensive interview with TIME Magazine, Trump's White House staff has settled into Trump's routine and know his desires, sometimes before he does, For example: Trump takes two scoops of ice cream with his chocolate cream pie, TIME reported, while everyone else around the table gets just one.

It’s more like May here today in Maryland, than February; and our thoughts are turning toward Spring. This King Cake that came in the Better Homes and Gardens email newsletter a few days ago is the prettiest I’ve seen. I like it because the ring is thinner than many that we see, which I think makes it very elegant. http://www.bhg.com/recipe/yeast-coffee-cakes/kings-cake/I believe we’ve featured these ‘tartes soleil’ previously, but this Feta Tapenade one from Smitten Kitchen is especially pretty and the recipe looks good; easy-to-follow instructions/pictures are included: https://smittenkitchen.com/2015/12/feta-tapenade-tarte-soleil/I attended a function recently where I had Corn Ice Cream for the...

UPDATE: Sheila Butt announced on Tuesday that she is withdrawing the bill. Read more about that here.Tennessee, more than 1 million people depend on benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to put food on their tables. Rep. Shelia Butt, R-Columbia, introduced a bill that would stop people from using those benefits, know as SNAP or food stamps, to buy foods high in calories, sugar and fat. Some people in our area think the bill is a good idea. "Milk and food items is fine," said Alan Rogers. "That's what they're for. Just to sustain life. All this other stuff...

In a discovery that will give nutritionists the shivers, a Japanese scientist has discovered that consuming ice cream for breakfast improves a person's alertness and mental performance. Yoshihiko Koga, a professor at Tokyo's Kyorin University, has carried out a series of clinical trials in which test subjects were required to eat ice cream immediately after waking up. They were then put through a series of mental exercises on a computer.

Black Lives Matter isn’t anti-police. Blue Lives Matter, a group of active and retired law enforcement officials, issued a statement on Monday demanding all Americans boycott Ben & Jerry’s after the ice cream maker announced its public support of Black Lives Matter last week. “Ben & Jerry’s went beyond making a statement in support of civil rights when they actively accused law enforcement of widespread racism,” Blue Lives Matter wrote. “By spreading these false and misleading statements, Ben & Jerry’s lends an appearance of legitimacy to the baseless claims that police officers are killing men based on the color of...

ITHACA, N.Y. -- A man snatched about $700 from a Maine-based ice cream vendor who was selling at the Ithaca Festival for the first time on Saturday. Robert and Jane Walters were selling ice cream around 5:30 p.m. on the 130 block of West State Street when the incident happened. The two have run the Island Cow Ice Cream Co. for the past 20 years out of Boothbay Harbor, Maine and usually sell ice cream along the east coast during the summer. Robert Walters said he was separating the bills in a basket he places money in and began talking...

An experimental ice cream brand named “Obamka" ["Little Obama” or, may be, "Obammy"] has appeared on sale in the Russian republic of Tatarstan. Deputy development director at the Slavitsa ice cream factory Rasil Mustafin, said that the name was not political but chosen due to the product's chocolate flavor. “There's no political underpinning. We have no intention to offend anyone,” he said. “Someone at the factory came up with the idea.” The product designers were inspired by a Soviet-era cartoon, said the factory's financial director Anatoli Ragimkhanov. The show featured an imaginary island named “Chunga-Changa,” inhabited by African children....

In L.A., there always seem to be new ways to stuff our faces with ice cream, be it scooping the dessert onto wacky churros or loading it into waffle "taco shells." Now comes an imported trend straight from South Korea, in the form of a zany, J-shaped cone. BluTusk, an ice cream shop on the second level of a Sawtelle strip mall right by Daiso and Nijiya Market, has been selling the hollow, puffed-corn cone (aka Jipangyi) filled with soft serve since December. While the cone made a splash in New York last year when Play J food truck introduced...

President Barack Obama says his unglamorous first job scooping ice cream taught him valuable lessons about responsibility and hard work. He wants the same experience for other teenagers, particularly those without resources, and is launching a summer opportunities project to help young people land a first job that can teach them similar lessons and help send them down the right path. The private sector, all levels of government, community groups and schools have pledged to help teenagers get their first jobs this summer. "Scooping ice cream is tougher than it looks," Obama said Thursday in an essay on the LinkedIn...

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie plans to issue a statement Wednesday afternoon suspending his presidential campaign, The Washington Times has learned. The announcement follows a disappointing sixth-place finish in New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary, where Mr. Christie was hoping a strong showing would give him more breathing room in a race where the tough-talking governor competed with former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida to emerge as the most viable alternative to businessman Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas...
