A Hong Kong pro-democracy protester was apparently beaten inside the grounds of the Chinese consulate in Manchester on Sunday, according to footage circulating on social media. Video footage appeared to show a man being assaulted as police officers tried to break up the chaotic scenes on Sunday afternoon. Iain Duncan Smith, the former Tory leader, told The Telegraph that the Chinese embassy must issue a "full apology" over the incident and said the individuals involved should be expelled from the UK.

Voting for UKIP is like writing a “suicide note” which will “not be forgiven” if it denies Britain the chance to vote on whether to remain a member of the EU, Iain Duncan Smith warns today. In a heartfelt intervention just 48 hours before polling day, the former Conservative leader urges those considering voting UKIP not to jeopardise a decades-long campaign he has waged to change Britain’s relationship with Brussels. • Latest election polls for May 5 The Work and Pensions Secretary describes a vote for Ukip as “unfathomable” as it risks allowing a weak minority Labour government – backed...

Tories send a 'clear signal' about marriage By George Jones, Political Editor Last Updated: 1:33pm BST 10/07/2007 It is time to stand up for marriage and send out a signal that it is good for society, a Tory policy group said today. Iain Duncan Smith wants the party to send a 'clear and unambiguous signal' about marriage The group called for a "reinstatement and full public use" of the term martial status and associated terms "husband, wife, spouse and marriage" in government forms and statements. This would send a "clear and unambiguous signal" about marriage, said the report drawn up...
  • Iain Duncan Smith & Rick Santorum: Let's Deploy the 'Little Platoons' (Conservative Social Justice)

For all the differences between the United States and Europe, we share a common challenge: how to improve the social well-being of our citizens without a massive growth in the size and intrusiveness of government. We're convinced that conservatism--properly understood--offers the surest road to social justice. In many conservative circles, "social justice" is synonymous with socialism or radical individualism. No wonder: For decades, the political left has used it as a Trojan horse for its big-state agenda. Yet the wreckage of their policies is obvious. Compared to the U.S., most European economies are struggling with inflation, unemployment, low growth and...

Bloggers will rescue the right Beat the metropolitan elite with the tactics of US conservatives Iain Duncan Smith Saturday February 19, 2005 The Guardian For decades the national conversation in most western countries has been directed by a few talking heads. Newspapers play important roles but all the evidence suggests that broadcasters have possessed the greatest potential to frame public debate. British politicians have known that communicating their message depends upon getting the nod from a small number of powerful figures in the broadcast media. The editor of BBC1's six o'clock news bulletin can make a minister's day by putting...

Veteran lawmaker Michael Howard. (Archives) LONDON - For the first time in more than 100 years, the British Conservative Party could have a Jewish leader. The party's ousting of Iain Duncan Smith now paves the way for Michael Howard to take over the leadership as a compromise candidate meant to avoid an internal party fight. Not since Benjamin Disraeli has there been a Jewish head of the Tories. Howard, the son of a Romanian-Jewish immigrant who adopted the Howard name to blend into his Welsh village, belongs to St. John's Wood synagogue in London. Many Tories' hopes appear to rest...

Iain Duncan Smith has narrowly failed to win the backing of enough Tory MPs to save his job in a dramatic confidence vote at Westminster. Mr Duncan Smith, party leader for just over two years, was backed by 75 MPs but opposed by 90. The result of the vote, which sparks the fourth Tory leadership election in eight years, was announced at 1859 GMT by the chairman of the Tory backbenchers' 1922 committee, Sir Michael Spicer. Soon after former party chairman David Davis said he was backing Michael Howard in the leadership contest, saying he had decided to turn down...

TORY PARTY DUMPS IDS Iain Duncan Smith has lost his job as leader of the Tory Party after a ballot of 165 Conservative MPs. A respectable 75 MPs supported him, against 90 who wanted him out. He had lasted two years, one month and 16 days as leader. Immediately after the result was announced, Mr Duncan Smith said: "The parliamentary party has spoken and I will stand down as leader when a successor has finally been chosen." Michael Howard has already announced he will stand in the upcoming leadership elections. But Shadow Deputy Prime Minister David Davis will not stand...
