It was on this date that the Jesuit missionary Saint Jean de Brébeuf was martyred by indigenous Iroquois near present-day Midland, Ontario. Brebeuf was of Norman stock, kin to poet Georges de Brebeuf. Ordained in 1622, Brebeuf soon decamped to the New World to Christianize the natives. There he teamed up with another Jesuit missionary named Gabriel Lalemant and established the Sainte-Marie among the Hurons mission. As the name advertises, this outpost aimed to minister to the Hurons (Wyandot); to that end, Brebeuf — who learned the local tongue well enough to write a catechism and a dictionary — composed...

In the Northeast woodlands the most feared and hated nation was the Iroquois — especially the Mohawk and Seneca. The Algonquian speaking nations and Iroquoian speaking Huron were particular enemies of the Iroquois. In the 1640s, the Iroquois unleashed a virtual genocide on the other Nations of the region, one that was not quickly forgotten. The Ojibwa defeated a number of the Iroquois incursions and ran the Sioux out of their forested homeland onto the plains. The Ojibwa (Chippewa and associated bands) occupied more land than any other tribe ever has from Manitoba to Indiana and took over smaller tribes...

We have the tape.US F-16 jets shot down another unknown object over Lake Huron today. The Pentagon said they have not ruled out extraterrestrial activity. “I haven’t ruled out anything at this point,” said Gen. Glen D. Van Herck. What a week. I think it’s time for a virtual trip to the beach. It might rain, which affords it’s own dreary charms. But if the sun rises over Lake St. Clair in southeast Michigan,as well as over Lake Huron in Tawas in northeast Michigan,it might just be a lovely day to take a partial Great Lakes Circle Tour around the Mitten state. As it’s still early in the season, and the water is still very chilly the Lake Michigan beaches in the north are unlikely to be crowded. Sleeping Bear National LakeshoreThat may be the case with those in the middle...

Teacher has published dictionary for once thriving Ontario tribe whose `Huron Carol' is Yule tradition The world's last Huron-language speaker is a white man teaching at Humber College. Anthropologist John Steckley has made the Huron tongue and Huron history his focus for more than 30 years, "and every year I think of how little I knew the year before," he says. Sometimes he feels alone in his interests, he says. At other times, he feels in demand – especially around Christmas and particularly this one. Earlier this month Steckley published an authoritative Huron-English dictionary, the first such volume in more...
