... For the public, the President's address was the first alarm bell of danger. But for many days the Commander-in-Chief Atlantic (CINCLANT) had been preparing to counter this newest aspect of the Russian buildup in Cuba. On October 18th, the prepositioning of forces to reduce reaction time in the event of action against Cuba continued. A reinforced infantry battalion, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines and Bravo Battery, 11th Marines from the Pacific Command's 5th MEB was ordered transferred to the operational control of CINCLANT and a light antiaircraft-missile battalion (Hawk) was ordered to Guantanamoto augment forces there. On October 22, 1962,...

The first month of fiscal 2008 was a success for all active and reserve military components. In a meeting with Pentagon reporters today, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said all components met or exceeded their recruiting and accession goals for October. On the active-duty side, the Army made 101 percent of its goal of 4,500, with 4,564 recruits. The Navy made 100 percent of its goal of 2,788 recruits. The Marine Corps made 102 percent of its goal of 2,720, with 2,788 enlisting. The Air Force made 100 percent of its goal of 2,656.

TORONTO — Time Magazine has chosen Prime Minister Stephen Harper its 2006 Canadian Newsmaker of the Year. Contributing editor Stephen Handelman writes that the prime minister who was "once dismissed as a doctrinaire backroom tactician with no experience in government has emerged as a warrior in power." The magazine says Mr. Harper defied conventional wisdom about how to lead a minority government. It says he slashed more than $1-billion worth of federal programs, reshuffled the federal bureaucracy, and reopened the wounds of the national unity debate by supporting Quebec's right to declare itself a “nation.” At the same time, Time...

Marines who encounter roadside bombs and respond appropriately now are eligible for the Combat Action Ribbon, according to the Marine Corps. The ribbon was and still is awarded to Marines who performed satisfactorily in a firefight or under enemy fire, said Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Michael Hagee in a Marine Corps announcement. But warfare has evolved to include a new threat — roadside bombs, also known as improvised explosive devices — Hagee said. As of Feb. 25, such devices have killed 927 U.S. troops in Iraq — about 52 percent of hostile deaths — and wounded 9,549 troops — about...

PATRIOT GUARDS: FIGHTING THE HATRED By Michelle Malkin   ·   December 27, 2005 01:50 PM The execrable Fred Phelps and his "church" continue to disrupt the funerals of fallen soldiers across the country. Jim Hoft has the latest. The good news is that veteran bikers of all political stripes have united to form the Patriot Guard Riders. Their mission: We have one thing in common besides motorcycles. We have an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security. If you share this respect, please join us. We don’t care what you ride, what your political...

MSNBC's talk show host Chris Matthews is a man who obviously: (1) Believes he is the smartest person on television; (2) Enjoys bullying women such as Michelle Malkin on the air; (3) Enjoys bullying senior citizens who may not be as quick with the mouth as he is; (4) Is irrelevent except for a few of his fellow moonbats who actually believe he's a mental giant; (5) Is of the opinion that he's really competition for Fox News Channel's lineup. During a speech he gave in Canada at the University of Toronto, Matthews did what most American liberals do when...

"The thankful tree" By Michelle Malkin "So, what did you do in school today?" It's the question I greet my daughter with every afternoon after she returns home from kindergarten. Usually, she recycles three jaded answers delivered with 5-going-on-16-year-old aplomb: "I don't remember," "I did the monkey bars," and "I drank chocolate milk." This week was different. She came home yesterday bubbling about a new holiday art project: The Thankful Tree. "You trace your hands and cut them out and then you write what you're thankful for on the hands," my enthused daughter explained, "and then you paste them onto...

I am asking all FReepers who are outraged at Rep. John Murtha for his devastating political stunt yesterday to contact him. Murtha may not care to hear from you unless you are one of his constituents, but HE put himself on the National stage yesterday calling for the immediate withdrawal of our troops in Iraq and as Americans, we need to let him hear from us. If ever there was a time for us to ban together on this forum, we need to do it now. The anti-war drumbeats are becoming deafening and ALL OF US need to find our...

Rep. John Murtha, who made headlines for his call to pull American troops immediately out of Iraq, has called on his daughter to immediately and unconditionally leave her suburban Pa. home. Murtha believes his daughter is trapped in a helpless parenting dilemma, as her twin boys frequently warn each other when trouble is brewing with Mom. The home, purchased in March 2002, is home to Murtha’s daughter, son-in-law, and two boisterous grandchildren. Parenting problems with the twin boys, 2, have caused increased strain on the family. A recent incident involving a broken vase has led Rep. Murtha to call for...

Does America Still Deserve The Marines? (by Gunny Bob Newman, retired 20-year veteran of the Marine Corps) Not that I know what one is, but I do know what one looks like. A parabolic wave is a thing that looks like a wave when viewed from the side. Parabolic waves appear on screens that are part of certain machines and computers and other technical devices. I suspect they are useless, really, but scientists and technicians like them because they look cool and by turning just about any dial, one can change the height and frequency of the wave. The war...

Rosen: Duty, Honor, Country November 11, 2005 Today is Veterans' Day - the day we honor those without whose sacrifice this nation would never have been forged nor could it continue to exist. It took a war to win our independence and freedom from England. It's taken many wars since then, the service of tens of millions and the ultimate sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of courageous Americans to defend those precious values. In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as Armistice Day, commemorating the end of hostilities in "the war to end all wars." That was a...

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- American troops and Iraqi special forces launched a major operation in Falluja late Thursday aimed at disrupting future attacks by insurgents who control the volatile city, the U.S. military said. U.S. warplanes pounded targets in the Sunni Triangle city, lighting up the nighttime sky and jolting a city that has been a hotbed for the insurgency for months. 1st Lt. Lyle Gilbert, a spokesman for the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, said Marines, Army soldiers and Iraqi special forces were participating "in and near the city of Falluja." The ground forces were being backed up by fixed-wing...

Super Bowl battle is dwarfed by what band of brothers faces Bryan Burwell Post-Dispatch Sports Columnist 01/22/2003 SAN DIEGO - It was just around midnight Tuesday night, and the outdoor courtyard at Dick's Last Resort was throbbing with the rowdy energy of a spring break bacchanal. There was loud rock music blaring out of the stereo speakers, and the air was filled with the distinct and somewhat revolting aroma of deep-fried bar food, cigarette smoke and spilled beer. Dick's is the sort of bar-restaurant ideally suited for Super Bowl week mischief, because it has a down-and-dirty roadhouse feel to it....
