Trump’s inauguration is getting a dose of soul, with “Soul Man” singer Sam Moore joining the lineup of performers just days after Jennifer Holliday pulled out. Moore, one half of the R&B duo Sam & Dave, announced Tuesday he’ll be appearing at the “Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration” in Washington on the eve of the Jan. 20 inauguration. "As an American, I am honored to perform for President-elect Donald Trump," Moore said in a statement. "I was a participant in the civil rights movement and have seen many positive changes and advancement in my 81 years of living in...

Corporations should be encouraged to support gay rights as a means to further economic gain, attendees at the World Economic Forum in Davos will hear this week. World leaders gather this week at the Swiss ski resort to discuss how to make globalism more inclusive in response to the rising tide of populism. As part of that agenda Chief Operating Officer of the Thomson Reuters Foundation Antonio Zappulla has suggested private and public sector leaders be encouraged to be more “inclusive” of LGBT staff. Singling out organisations who have been leading on that agenda for praise, Zappulla cited the British...

CNN)Bishop Eddie Long, the controversial leader of one of the nation's largest megachurches, has died, according to the suburban Atlanta church he presided over. He was 63. Long died after a battle with an aggressive form of cancer, according to a statement by the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. Long was a national figure and one of the most innovative and polarizing pastors in the contemporary church. He was also a paradox. He was a preacher who led an infamous march against same-sex marriage and denounced homosexuality, but he also settled a lawsuit by four young men who said he...

Chelsea Manning saw injustice and stood up for what’s right. Now, she’s serving a 35 year sentence in an all-male military prison. She’s been systematically abused by the U.S. government, held in conditions that the UN considers to be torture, and has attempted suicide twice during her 7 years behind bars. But now there’s hope. NBC reports that she is on President Obama’s “short list” for commutation. The news has sparked a groundswell of support for Chelsea online. Hundreds of thousands of people have already taken action to support her, but now the message is simpler than ever. But now...

Donald Trump's supporters have hit out at Hollywood once again, this time over a video of some of the biggest celebrities defiantly singing before his inauguration. A new clip by W Magazine and Conde Nast Entertainment shows the likes of Emma Stone, Natalie Portman and Amy Adams reciting the disco classic I Will Survive. The star-studded cast is seen participating in a 'lyrical improv' reading of the Gloria Gaynor song in the video, released just days before Trump will be sworn in. It's already racked up more than a million views, but many of Trump's most fervent fans found the...

Calvary Baptist Church, a progressive Baptist landmark in the heart of downtown Washington, has named a gay couple as co-pastors. Sally Sarratt and Maria Swearingen were presented to the congregation during worship services Jan. 8 and are set to begin their new jobs Feb. 26... The 155-year-old church severed ties with the Southern Baptist Convention in 2012: It was at loggerheads with the group on several issues, including the SBC’s stance against homosexuality. (CNN)The State Department on Monday formally apologized for what it describes as decades of discrimination against LGBT employees and job applicants, a rare statement meant to right wrongs that preceded current Secretary of State John Kerry. "These actions were wrong then, just as they would be wrong today," Kerry said in a statement issued by the department in his name. "On behalf of the Department, I apologize to those who were impacted by the practices of the past." Kerry has been under pressure in recent weeks to issue a public apology. In November, Sen. Ben Cardin, a Maryland Democrat who...

Editor's Note: This piece was coauthored by Tim Graham. The secular-left website Slate recently warned on Twitter that "'Religious Freedom' legislation will be everywhere in 2017." "Religious freedom" is in scare quotes, a warning that deplorables will use that thing called religion as their weapon of choice in the coming assault on the LGBTQ community. The same website is celebrating a petition urging the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to reverse its acceptance of an invitation to sing at President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration. The freedom to disassociate becomes a terrific idea when used to reject Republicans or conservatives. Slate's story has a hero...

‘Gold standard’ study’s striking findings: children of heterosexual parents happier, healthier The most scientifically credible studies show that children of heterosexual parents fare better on numerous indicators of personal well-being than children of homosexual parents. Authored by Mark Regnerus, a sociology professor at the University of Texas at Austin, the study was published in the July 2012 issue of Social Science Research. Children of lesbian mothers are nearly 12 times (≅ 1200%) as likely to say they were sexually touched by a parent or adult as those raised in intact biological families. Asked if they had ever been raped, 31...

November 8 was a whirlwind of emotions. Starting my day off in Rhode Island, I eagerly rushed over to my local polling location in Providence at 7 a.m. with my younger brother to cast my ballot for Hillary Clinton. She was not perfect, not by a long shot, and any claims to the contrary were often rooted in the shortcomings of white feminism—which roots its platform in the obstructions faced by cisgender white women without nuanced conversations around race, class, ethnicity, queer theory, and other issues related to identity. However, what she did hold was potential for progress and improved...

  • Who Are We Americans Now? And who will we become under Trump? (From the Left)

“That’s not who we are,” Barack Obama often says when appealing to Americans to oppose illiberal policies such as torturing prisoners, barring immigrants on the basis of their religion, and denying entry to refugees. But now that Americans have elected a president who has called for precisely those policies, Obama’s confidence about who we are may seem misplaced. Questions about the defining values of our common nationality have haunted us before at critical moments in American history, and now they do again: In the wake of Donald Trump’s election, what does it mean to be an American? Will Trump and...

“You make the decisions you think are right, right now, regardless what you think is going to happen in the future,” Mabus said. “But we are stronger because of this integration. That is undeniably true. So, if it gets rolled back, you’re weakening the United States military. You’re weakening the Navy. You’re weakening the Marine Corps. If that’s what you want to do, okay. But you have to be honest about it.”

This week the brave African delegations to the UN fought a rear-guard action to stop a new UN office that will seek out and punish any country or institution that does not bend to the will of the dominant LGBT ethos. This months-long fight began at the Human Rights Council in Geneva and it was almost stopped there. It could have been stopped there. It could have been stopped anywhere along the way as it moved from Geneva to the Third Committee of the General Assembly and finally this week to the General Assembly itself. All that was left to...

The pro-Trump Twitterverse is lobbing hundreds of angry posts and meme attacks at the Brooklyn husbands who were kicked off a plane at JFK after one yelled at future First Daughter Ivanka. The Cobble Hill couple, attorney Daniel Goldstein and Hunter College Urban Studies Professor Matthew Lasner, are being trolled as “jerks,” “misogynists,” “political terrorists,” “heterophobic bigots,” and all manner of offensive gay slurs. A flood of one-star pans also is filling the Amazon review page for Lasner’s new book, “High Life: Condo Living in the Suburban Century.” Meanwhile, a Trump confidante said Ivanka will probably keep flying commercial because...
