A Lake Butler man was critically injured Friday morning when a car coming from the opposite direction on State Road 121 north of Gainesville hit a deer, sending the animal careening through the man's windshield and out the truck's rear window, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. According to troopers, LaCrosse resident Richard Swygart, 29, was driving a 2010 Chevy Malibu northbound on SR 121 near the intersection with County Road 236, south of Worthington Springs, at around 7:20 a.m. Friday when a deer crossed the road directly in front of Swygart's vehicle. FRANKLIN, Pa. -- Pennsylvania police said a man who died after being struck by a vehicle may have been left on a roadside for days because his body was apparently mistaken for a dead deer. The man was found on Monday by a motorist, who at first thought the man was a deer because of tan clothing and snow that covered part of his body. The motorist realized the man wasn't a deer after noticing his shoes.

Researchers at the University of Missouri have mounted wireless video cameras on white-tailed deer to get a better idea of how the animals see their world and what's behind their behavior. The battery-run cameras with miniature transmitters were placed between the antlers of two bucks and round the neck of one doe. The images are sent electronically to VHS tape for recording. The National Science Foundation has awarded a $1 million grant for the work...

Yews stripped of evergreen needles, bushes picked clean of rose and azalea buds, pansies nipped to the stem and thousands of carcass littering the roadways. The evidence is everywhere that the white-tailed deer has taken a toll on the Washington area and most of the East Coast. They destroy nearly $1 billion worth of U.S. crops, timber and landscaping annually. And each year they cause most of the 500,000 animal-related vehicle accidents that result in about 100 fatalities and $2.5 billion in damages. Wildlife officials from Maryland and Virginia acknowledge that they have had little success in reducing the deer...

WAUSAU, Wisconsin (AP) -- Wisconsin's traditional deer hunt opens Saturday with hunters wondering for the first time whether their prey is infected with a rare, always fatal brain disease.

There are no documented cases of chronic wasting disease being transmitted from deer to humans, but scientists cannot rule out the possibility.
