Two people were injured as villagers scrambled for meat from a hippo that was killed by a vehicle along Thika Road yesterday. The hippo lay near Clayworks Factory on the busy Thika highway near Kenyatta University for several hours after a speeding vehicle hit it. Armed with all manner of tools, passersby and local residents rushed to the scene to get a slice of the rare meat. "I have eaten hippo meat in the past and I know how sweet it is. Let us have the meat," a man said as he ran to the scene. The injured men were...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A second look at some 40-million-year-old fossils provides a "missing link" to suggest that the closest living relative of whales is the hippo, a group of scientists said on Monday. Although the hippopotamus does not seem a likely relative of whales, genetic study has suggested they are close. Now, a team at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Poitiers in France and the University of N'djamena in Chad say they have found more evidence in the fossil record. "The problem with hippos is, if you look at the general shape of the animal it could...

LONDON (Reuters) - A huge find of fossils in Eastern England has revealed a pre-glacial period when the area basked in temperatures now more closely associated with the African savannah, scientists said on Thursday. The bones of seven-ton hippos half as big again as today's descendants have been found alongside those of horses, hyenas, deer, primitive mammoths, rodents and plants giving an unprecedented insight into the distant past. "This is a very significant find," said palaeontologist Simon Parfitt at London's Natural History Museum. "The site is unique in that we have this huge variety of different species all perfectly preserved."...
