Diversity immigration lottery may be canceled WASHINGTON - A House subcommittee may consider eliminating a visa lottery program that helps about 50,000 aliens enter the country each year. Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., has sponsored legislation that would eliminate the Diversity Visa Program, created in 1990 to increase diversity in the U.S. immigrant population. The program aims to provide nationals of countries with low U.S. immigration rates the opportunity to apply for immigrant visas.
