Betty Balderama should still be alive today. But for this dedicated mom and domestic worker from Oakland, a treatable condition — diabetes — turned out to be a death sentence. Why? Because like over 2 million Californians, Betty was undocumented. Cruelly shut out of the Affordable Care Act by Congress, she had limited access to basic medical care and a fear of crushing financial burdens. Two years ago, Betty died, emaciated, only 55 years old.
