A defense attorney for the Connecticut opera singer who drew gunfire while driving through checkpoints outside President Donald Trump’s Florida home says she is mentally ill. The attorney for Hannah Roemhild told a Palm Beach County judge Monday that she had stopped taking her medication, causing Friday’s wild car chase. Roemhild will be examined by a psychologist and will remain jailed pending a future hearing.

Roemhild was set to appear before a judge Saturday morning, but her appearance was rescheduled for Monday at 10 a.m. after she reportedly refused to appear in court. Roemhild grew up in Connecticut and has traveled around the world as a singer. She is “very astute, very intelligent" and her actions are “very uncharacteristic of her,” a family friend said. No one was hurt from the chase and shooting. Trump was not at Mar-a-Lago at the time although he arrived hours later for the Super Bowl weekend. When he approached the woman, she got into her Jeep, ignored him and drove away, breaching two security checkpoints near President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club and prompting authorities to open fire, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said Friday.
