A handyman turned the tables on suspected squatters who took over his mother's Northern California home. "If they could take a house, then I could take a house," Flash Shelton of the United Handyman Association said in a YouTube video. "They're the squatter, and they have rights. Well, then, if I become the squatter on the squatter, then I should have rights, right?" Shelton's video detailing his quest to reclaim the California home has garnered more than two million views on YouTube. Shelton said his father recently passed away, and his mother couldn't live in the house on her own....

Cops are looking to question the former handyman lover of slain Queens mom Orsolya Gaal who had intimate knowledge of her home — including where the family kept a spare key, The Post has learned. The man, who has not yet been formally identified as a person of interest or suspect in the gruesome slaying, is believed to have had a romantic relationship with the 51-year-old married mother of two before the affair went south, law-enforcement sources said. It’s unclear when the relationship began and ended, but according to sources familiar with the case, the man knew where the family...

For homeowners eager to save money on repairs, it’s a tempting proposition—you pay a tradesman cash-in-hand, he knocks a bit off the bill, and no questions are asked. With the builder or plumber failing to declare their earnings and pay any tax, such secret payments are said to cost the economy £2 billion a year. Now a survey suggests the black economy is booming, with more than four in five homeowners admitting they have paid a workman cash-in-hand. Not only that, but 30 percent have done it three times or more in the past year alone. …

A handyman who was injured in a "Laurel and Hardy moment" after propping his ladder against the tree branch he then sawed off is suing his employers. Peter Aspinall, 64, had been asked to prune a sycamore tree in the grounds of a hotel, but instead of leaning his ladder against the trunk he placed it against the branch he was hacking down. When the branch fell it took Mr Aspinall with it, 14ft to the ground below. He broke his heel, damaged his ligaments and had to spend ten days in hospital recovering from surgery on his injuries. Now...

Jon Tennett loves to tinker in his garage. It's not an uncommon pastime for an 81-year-old man, but what is unusual is the city's response. Because Tennett fixes his neighbours' lawn mowers and other small machines, the City of Pickering has charged him with operating an illegal business - even though he's never charged a penny for his work. "They could get a lot of revenue elsewhere than looking at an old 81-year-old man trying to keep his mind busy," he points out. On the same street, a retired nurse is facing a similar problem. Janice Saroop has a lush...

Gordon Cook, 55, has used the bizarre "DIY dentistry" technique on a loose crown for the last three years - with each fresh application of glue lasting around two months. The father of seven, who was erased from his original dentist's register after moving to a new home in Tranmere, Merseyside, said he turned to glue after losing hope of finding a dentist. He said: "I tried to find a new dentist but they had all gone private. "A lot of them said they would take me on as an NHS patient, but only if I agreed to have the...

FREEHOLD -- A self-employed contractor was indicted Friday on hundreds of counts of child sex assault and child pornography after authorities said he spent years molesting children and recording them while he worked at their homes. Clement Bilski Jr., 43, is accused of preying on at least 11 girls and boys, ranging in age from 23 months to 8 years. He abused them in their own homes between 1998 and 2005, often while caretakers were elsewhere in the houses, then offered the children toys and candy to stay quiet, said Monmouth Prosecutor Luis Valentin. "The depravity in this case has...

The Red Green Show's farewell episode is called Do As I Say -- the "not as I do" part is left unsaid. It's the kind of wry, self-deprecating humour that has made Steve Smith's homegrown gadget man a faithful standby in Canadians' homes for 15 years now, and 300 episodes. It's a little late to win new converts, and the farewell episode doesn't try. Instead, in its own humble way, it's perfect for what it is. No big-bang moment, no after-death revelation -- not even an extended episode, beyond its usual half-hour running time. Green (Smith) and his man-child nephew,...

A handyman's guide to decks and other manmade disasters BY DAVE BARRY (This classic Dave Barry column was originally published on May 28, 2000.) Today's Do-It-Yourself Project Is: How To Build a Deck. There's nothing like adding a deck to transform an ordinary home into a home attached to a mass of inexpertly nailed wood. And just imagine the family fun you'll have this summer with a deck! ''Come on, kids!'' you'll call to your children. ''Let's go out on the deck and have some fun!'' ''Shut UP,'' they'll gaily reply, because they are engrossed in a Sony PlayStation video...
