JJoseph Carey Merrick (5 August 1862 – 11 April 1890), sometimes incorrectly named John Merrick, was an English man with very severe deformities who was first exhibited at a freak show as the "Elephant Man", and then went to live at the London Hospital after he met Frederick Treves, so becoming well known in London society.... [Some persons remarked on Merrick's strong Christian faith (Treves is also said to have been a Christian), and his strong character and courage in the face of afflictions earned him admiration.] Between 1979 and 1982, Merrick's life story became the basis of several works...

A school resource officer in Warren, Ohio, was removed from school premises after issuing a parking ticket for the school principal after she repeatedly parked in a handicap zone, according to multiple media reports. WARREN, Ohio - According to Michael Currington, a representative for the city of Warren's police union, Google Earth shows clearly the reason for what started with a warning and ended with controversy."The resource officer had given a number of verbal warnings over a period of time to the principal of the facility to not park in a handicap designated area," said city law director Greg Hicks.But...

SACRAMENTO — A disability rights advocate drowned in a bizarre accident when she fell into the Sacramento River in her wheelchair after watching Fourth of July fireworks. Laurie Hoirup's husband, Jacob Hoirup, tells the Sacramento Bee (http://bit.ly/29mKqJs) the accident happened after she and several other people were getting off a pontoon at the Sacramento Marina Monday night after watching fireworks on the boat. He says the 60-year-old woman was on a ramp between the boat and dock when the boat shifted and caused the ramp to fall into the water, bringing her, her husband and some others down with it....
  • Designing for Seniors and Soldiers, Toward a "Silver" Architecture

n a recent opinion piece in The New York Times, geriatrician Louise Aronson advocated for a new type of building, one designed with an aging population in mind, which, she suggests, might be dubbed “silver” architecture. The idea came to her after taking her father to a top-notch, “green” medical center that was surprisingly unaccommodating for older patients. Sure, sustainability is important, but a building needs to do more than perform efficiently and attract millennials. Aronson notes: Such approaches once may have made sense from a business perspective, but current demographic realities are creating financial and practical reasons to build...

Yesterday I posted the picture of this devise over at Gunway… it is designed to help individuals who have hand problems to more easily manipulate the slide of a semi auto pistol. The comments section created a bit of a backlash that didnt sit very well with me personally. I will say upfront that perhaps I took things out of context or perhaps the people commenting simply didnt get their point across effectively enough… that can certainly happen on the interwebs. However, what was said really touched a nerve with me… mainly because the comments completely wrote off anyone who...

Even though ten years have passed since Fredrik Jansson from Skellefteĺ in northern Sweden had his leg amputated, he must still prove his leg hasn't grown back in order to keep his disabled parking permit. “It is ridiculous to say the least. It defies all common sense,” Jansson told The Local. Eleven years ago, Jansson was forced to have his leg amputated after a long battle with cancer. Despite the fact that it is unlikely his condition will get better, he regularly has to prove to local authorities that he has enough trouble walking to need a disabled parking permit....

Given Obama is our first Black President, which says so much about the fairness of the American people, I would like to start a petition drive that would spot President Obama a number of points in the upcoming 2012 election. In other words, as with many other positions and conditions in our society, President Obama deserves a handicap to make things "fair." My only question is: "How much of a handicap does everyone think is fair? 5 points, 2 points...how much?

A MUSICIAN who lost both arms in a childhood accident and plays the piano with his toes has won China's Got Talent, performing his version of James Blunt's wistful love song You're Beautiful to a packed audience at the Shanghai Stadium. All three judges on the show on Sunday praised Liu Wei, 23, for his determination, urging him to keep pursuing his dreams, and the Beijing native said he would try, quipping: "At least I have a pair of perfect legs." For winning the Chinese version of the show, he will be invited to play as a guest performer with...

NEW YORK - Charges of racism, sexism, and religious discrimination filled the air this afternoon outside the just-completed Cordoba House, the gleaming new $100 million 15 story mosque and Islamic cultural center near the ruins of New York's World Trade Center, following a tense 5-hour standoff prompted by the mosque's refusal to host a wedding between a lesbian African-American woman and her blind white transgendered partner.

Scamming free parking at a meter or scoring a prime blue-zone space by displaying a fake, stolen or borrowed disabled parking tag could soon cost a lot more.A state law that took effect Friday allows cities to charge anywhere from $250 to $1,000 for violating disabled parking laws. And San Francisco, where finding a parking space can induce extreme behavior, is wasting no time. On Tuesday, the Metropolitan Transportation Agency will consider raising its fines for fraudulent use of disabled plates, placards and tags to $825, from $100. Fines for lesser offenses, such as parking in a disabled space without...

Wondering No More [Jonah Goldberg] Yep. The day after 9/11, as part of its "get tough" makeover, the Obama campaign is mocking John McCain for not using a computer, without caring why he doesn't use a computer. From the AP story about the computer illiterate ad: "Our economy wouldn't survive without the Internet, and cyber-security continues to represent one our most serious national security threats," [Obama spokesman Dan] Pfeiffer said. "It's extraordinary that someone who wants to be our president and our commander in chief doesn't know how to send an e-mail." Well, I guess it depends on what you...

I own a startup staffing service here in the St. Louis metro area. Wednesday a kid came in to apply for assignment with us, and he brings a woman with him. It turns out she is his "work coach". What this means is that every time he goes looking for a job, she's with him, injecting herself into the proceedings, talking about him like he isn't there, using terms like "high-functioning" as if the guy were retarded. The poor bastard would do much better on his own. Has anybody else encountered anything like this?

Amputee sprinter ruled ineligible for Olympics Associated Press Updated: January 14, 2008, 4:37 PM EST MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) - All his life, Oscar Pistorius has had to battle adversity. Competing in the Beijing Olympics is a challenge the double-amputee runner may not be able to overcome. The IAAF ruled Monday that the South African is ineligible to compete in Beijing — or any other sanctioned able-bodied competitions — because his "Cheetah" racing blades are considered "technical aids" which give him a clear competitive advantage. Pistorius finished second in the 400 meters at the South African National Championships last year...

For years, Lafayette resident Maureen Birdsall would take her brother, who has cerebral palsy, to appointments and then drive in circles hunting for an empty handicapped parking space. It irked her to see able-bodied people pulling into those spots or using a handicapped placard that she suspected was not theirs. Birdsall now is doing battle with handicapped parking violators. She launched the free Web site http://www.handicappedfraud.org to give people a place to report the license plates, handicapped placard numbers and locations of cars suspected of abusing the law. "Something has to be done," Birdsall said. "It's gone unchecked for so...
