Gun Owners of America (GOA) is warning that House Speaker Paul Ryan’s Obamacare 2.o still contains measures that will allow doctors, insurance companies, and the ATF to use medical records to further a gun control agenda. On Thursday, Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly announced their newest spinoff, Arizona Coalition for Common Sense, which will be in place to push more gun control on Arizonans. Yet a 17-year-old attacker had “a revolver, a pistol, a hunting rifle, and two grenades” on his person at the high school in Grasse. The report of “grenades” is a reminder that all the gun control in the world–even complete confiscation of every firearm ever made–would not stop a determined attacker; this is because determined attackers find other weapons–like trucks in Nice or, in this case, grenades–and are prepared to use those weapons against unarmed, defenseless civilians.

Oddly enough, criminals haven’t yet deduced the allegedly awesome crime-evading powers of the silencer. The bill’s author, as well as her lead witness, both invoked the name of my late husband, Albuquerque Police Department officer Daniel Webster, to promote the measure. Along with the media, they continue to imply that had these proposed laws been in place, my husband’s death would have been prevented… I am not okay with this, and I know Dan would not have wanted his name associated with this bill either. He was against expanded background checks of any kind and stood behind our Second Amendment rights with honor and appreciation.

It is interesting to note that the 4th Circuit’s ruling comes in the wake of a “white paper” in which ATF Associate Deputy Director Ronald Turk argued against ongoing importation bans on “assault weapons.” Turk argued on the grounds that such weapons are increasingly popular for sport shooting and are actually “standard for hunting activities.” The Washington Post published the paper in which Turk said continued opposition to the weapons is based on an “almost 20-year-old study.” But the 4th Circuit described the sporting and hunting rifles as “exceptionally lethal weapons of war.”

The 4th Circuit's decision in Kolbe et al v. Maryland was a direct, if often legally incomprehensible attempt to greatly limit the Supreme Court's seminal decision in Heller and set the stage for a new national ban on semi-automatic rifles. Heller held that the 2nd Amendment confers an individual not a collective right to keep and bear arms. Kolbe, so long as it stands, says this individual right does not extend to any firearm with military utility, which is arguably pretty much every gun ever made.

The Chicago Police Department conducted a series of overnight raids from Thursday into Friday that resulted in 81 arrests, mostly for drug- and weapons-related offenses, Supt. Eddie Johnson said Friday. The raids, focused on the city's South and West Side neighborhoods, were "focused on the underlying source of crime in these areas: the sale of narcotics," Johnson said at a press conference Friday afternoon. Should “military-style rifles” be banned? On Tuesday, the federal Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia – in a virtual party line vote – upheld Maryland’s assault weapons ban. In the 10 to 4 En Banc decision, Democrats supported the ban while Republicans opposed it. Writing for the majority, Judge Robert King, a Clinton appointee, argued that the Second Amendment does not protect people owning “weapons of war.” His opinion starts out by listing recent mass public shootings that have used AR-15-type rifles, guns that he also refers to as “military-style rifles,” in their attacks.

It’s likely nobody anywhere has done more research on, or knows more about, mass shootings than researcher John Lott. A federal appeals court has ruled that a Florida law restricting doctors from asking patients whether they own guns restricts the right to free speech. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that the law violated doctors’ First Amendment right to free speech, and concluded that the state failed to prove that physicians were infringing on patients’ Second Amendment rights. A previous decision by a three-judge panel by the 11th Circuit upheld the law, but those suing the state asked for the full circuit court to re-consider the case. ... The Senate nixed an Obama-era rule that could block some people receiving Social Security disability benefits from being able to buy a gun. Senators voted 57-43 to strike down a regulation that requires the Social Security Administration to report people who receive disability benefits and have a mental health condition to the FBI's background check system. The database is used to determine eligibility for buying a firearm.
