The nation has seen an increasing trend among lawmakers, particularly those on the left, in utilizing the state to drive our consumer choices. Generally, these have come from punitive measures. In addition to added regulations on food producers, they have struck directly at the consumer, in the form of "sin taxes" on sodas and other foods high in sugar and cholesterol in an "altruistic" attempt to persuade Americans to eat healthier.
