[Catholic Caucus] The Whisky Priest and Jairus’ DaughtersBefore the start of Mass in a Mexican town last week, a wounded American bishop looked into a sea of teenage girls who had, he’d been told, been hurt in inhumane ways. Three thousand or so girls stood before him at Villa de Las Niñas in blue skirts, white blouses, bobby socks, and black saddle shoes. These were Mexico’s bullied ones from Guerrero, Oaxaca, Durango, Veracruz, Puebla, Jalisco, and numberless other poor villages. In the silence of the mammoth gymnasium, the wounded looked into the eyes of the wounded. Sorrow wrung the bishop’s...

“Salvation in the Good Shepherd and in No One Else” (Acts 4:1-12; John 10:11-18) Today we are celebrating “Good Shepherd Sunday,” the day every year when the readings, the hymns, etc., all deal with Jesus as our Good Shepherd. Which makes our first reading today seem a little out of place. Because in this text from Acts 4 there is no mention of “shepherd” or “flock” or that type of language. But it is a strong resurrection text, which makes it fitting during this Easter season. And it certainly proclaims salvation in Christ most clearly. And this does tie in...

Posted on May 2, 2020 by Msgr. Charles Pope Are You Smarter than a Sheep? A Homily for the 4th Sunday of Easter This homily is in video form below if you prefer to watch it. The Fourth Sunday of Easter is traditionally called Good Shepherd Sunday, for the readings focus on how our risen Lord Jesus is our shepherd, who leads us to eternal life. Of course the flip side is that we are sheep. We sometimes miss the humor of the Lord calling us sheep. He could have said we are strong and swift as horses, beautiful...

Photo credit: Toby HudsonOn this fourth Sunday of Easter we turn a corner of sorts. Up until now we have been reading of the resurrection appearances themselves. Today we begin to see how the risen Lord ministers to us as the Good Shepherd. In effect, the Lord gives us four basic pictures or teachings of how, as the King of Love, He shepherds...

Featured Term (selected at random): SHEEP Symbols of the Twelve Apostles, with Christ in the center as the Good Shepherd. A later symbol early found in the catacombs shows Our Lord either supporting a wounded sheep on his shoulder with the other sheep nearby or the Shepherd rescuing the wandering lost ewe caught in a briary thicket. The twenty-third psalm speaks of "the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want." In song and story it is illustrative of God's providence and concern. Sheep are symbols of docility, humility, and long suffering, all attributes expected of those who follow the...

Looking for information about DeNiro's new flick "The Good Shepherd", which he directed and in which he stars with Matt Damon, A. Jolie, Joe Pesci and Alec Baldwin. This tagline found on IMBD.org, The true story of the birth of the CIA through the eyes of a man who never existed, plus the fact the DeNiro directs, leads me to believe it might be a hatchet job on the CIA.

“What is your opinion?  If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray?  And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it  than over the ninety-nine that did not stray.  In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father that one of these little ones be lost.”  Matthew 18:12-14 There are moments that I am amazed at the strong hands unsought that lift me up out of the morass...

The priesthood in America today is in crisis.  One symptom of that crisis was revealed through media coverage of the heinous and disgraceful behavior of some priests, and the concealing of that behavior by their bishops.       In the past, Church crises have often been the impetus for movements of reform and renewal, and today is no exception. Positive initiatives are beginning in many regions of our country. One of these is the Novena Prayer to the Good Shepherd--initially the idea of a layman and two priests.      Why a Novena? Because this is such a long-established way to...
