In 1997, a forensic examiner in Berlin reported one of his more unusual cases in the journal Forensic Science International. A 31-year-old man had retired for the evening to the converted garden shed behind his mother’s house, where he lived with his German shepherd. Around 8:15 p.m., neighbors heard a gunshot from the direction of the shed. snip The German shepherd was calm and responded to police commands. On the way to an animal sanctuary, the dog vomited some of its owner’s tissue, including skin with still-recognizable beard hair.

On Oct. 4, Jason Dubin drove to La Guardia Airport to pick up the newest member of his household. Six days after that first happy meeting, Mr. Dubin returned to La Guardia with that same member, a German shepherd named Emmi, and sent her on a Continental Airlines flight to Seattle with a one-way ticket. “I just couldn’t control her anymore; it was just time to part ways,” said Mr. Dubin, who made the drive from his Port Jefferson home on Long Island as Emmi, who is 5, fidgeted and barked in the back seat. Mr. Dubin had bought the...

Somewhere in a lonely back yard, a young dog lived chained to a tree without food, water or attention. He waited for that food, and when it didn’t come, he ate dirt. Eventually the dog laid down and he didn’t get up. But still, he didn’t die. An anonymous Good Samaritan stepped in April 7 and rescued the German shepherd from sure death. The animal, not much more than skin and bone, wailed in agony on the way to get help. The dog was taken to an emergency animal hospital in Orange County where a horrified veterinary technician called...

A Yonkers man was arrested by local police after he slashed a German shepherd because it was racist. According to 58-year-old Andrew Owens, Jenna the German shepherd only barked at minorities and bit him in the past because of his race. When the dog began barking at him on Tuesday, Owens reportedly became so furious that he took out a nine inch knife and slashed the dog across the face. The dog was reportedly cut from the right eye down to the eye socket bone. The dog lost an eye because of the incident and was hospitalized.

A German shepherd named Fero did something that he’s never done before and because he did, a 10-year-old boy is safe with his family. On Tuesday afternoon Fero went into the woods with his handler, Nashua police officer Jeff Connors, and found Ross Kolesar, who had wandered away from a party and was lost for well over an hour.Fero is not a search and rescue dog, or at least he isn’t under normal circumstances. He’s a patrol dog, a drug-sniffing dog, one who is used to apprehending suspects, not rescuing lost children from swamps. But on Aug. 27, that’s exactly...
