In a traditional spring, various species of pollinating trees and flowers bloom sequentially over a period of about 2½ months, said Estelle Levetin, who has studied airborne pollen since 1980. If spring is delayed, more plants pollinate all at once, creating a shorter but more intense season that can exacerbate symptoms for people who are allergic. “This year we had an unusually cold winter that lasted longer than normal, and that set back pollen release significantly,” said Levetin, a biology professor at the University of Tulsa. “Each individual plant is not pollinating much more than normal. We’re just having a...

Tumbleweeds overtake neighborhood and trap families in their homes Recent tornado-like winds have covered a Colorado Springs, Colorado neighborhood in tumbleweeds. The large dried plants have invaded the Cuchares Ranches subdivision to such a degree that some residents said they were trapped in their homes and had to call 911 for help. “I look outside and tumbleweeds are literally blowing up and over our house,” Melissa Walker told KRDO NewsChannel 13. “I didn’t expect to be able to jump from my second story window into a pile of tumbleweeds.” In some places, the tumbleweeds are stacked 10-feet high. As reported...

Colorado colleges and universities have seen a dramatic jump in applications, including from out of state, following the legalization of marijuana, but officials insist there’s no drug connection. Applications to the University of Colorado are up 30 percent since Amendment 64 made recreational pot legal, according to Director of Admissions Kevin MacLennan. But while several marijuana advocates told FoxNews.com it is hardly surprising that the Centennial State would become a mecca for college-bound tokers, MacLennan disagrees. “We aren’t getting a lot of questions about this,†MacLennan said, referring to the new law. He said a better explanation for the rise...

OILDALE, Calif. — The tanker trains loaded with crude oil still rattle down the tracks at the end of the alleyway where Merle Haggard, a living legend of country music, grew up in a boxcar that his father transformed into the family home. “The walls were thick: cool in the summer and warm in winter,” Lillian Haggard Rea, the musician’s 93-year-old sister, recalled of the boxcar that their father, James Haggard, a carpenter with the Santa Fe railroad, converted by hand during the Depression. It was, she said, “just a wonderful home to live in.” Like much of the music...

It’s shear madness! Brooklyn’s hipster beard craze has grown so popular that men in New York are rushing to doctors for “facial hair transplants” — surgery that helps make beards look thicker and less patchy, sources said. Stubble-challenged guys are forking over up to $8,500 for the beard-boosting procedure, which has spiked in popularity in recent months, plastic surgeons told The Post. “Brooklyn is probably the nucleus of the trend, it’s the hipster ‘look’ guys want. If you have a spotty beard, and you let it grow out, it looks sloppy, ” said Dr. Jeffrey Epstein, a Midtown-based plastic surgeon....

Golf’s most famous pine tree is no longer guarding the 17th hole at Augusta National Golf Club. The Eisenhower Tree suffered major damage in an ice storm and was removed over the weekend, the club confirmed Sunday. Photos showed major limb damage, particularly on the left side and top of the tree. “The loss of the Eisenhower Tree is difficult news to accept,” Augusta National and Masters Chairman Billy Payne said in a prepared statement. “We obtained opinions from the best arborists available and, unfortunately, were advised that no recovery was possible.” The Masters landmark, also known as Ike’s Tree,...

There is a lot of snow on the ground in Michigan. When the snow melts, just how much water is in all of the snow on the ground now? The top graphic shows the "snow water equivalent" for the Lower Peninsula. This means the amount of liquid if the snow in a tube was all melted at once. All of the Lower Peninsula has at least one inch of liquid in the snow. Most of the Lower Peninsula has two to six inches of liquid in the form of snow. The heaviest snowfall areas in northwest Lower Michigan have between...
