The Tech Report crew seems to think that SteamOS and Mantle could ruin PC gaming. I'm not sure how they came to that conclusion but I'm sure you guys will have plenty to say on the topic. Now, all of a sudden, next year's gaming landscape looks to be shaping up very differently. Instead of three major platforms based on a common hardware architecture, game developers will face two monolithic platforms and a fragmented one—the PC—that will have two starkly different operating systems and three different APIs—Direct3D, OpenGL, and Mantle.

Sony PlayStation 4 Claimed to Have Well-Balanced Architecture Although the PlayStation 4 was designed to be like a personal computer in a bid to simplify development of video games, it is still a lot different than personal computers, according to game developers who are working on titles for the PS4. As it appears, the difference between custom system and off-the-shelf PC is pretty huge, yet the technical director or Guerrilla Games did not reveal too many details about it.Michiel Van Der Leeuw, the technical director of Guerrilla Games, which is a studio that belongs to Sony Computer Entertainment and which...

Avalanche Studios Believes in PlayStation 4’s 8GB of GDDR5 Being based on low-power/low-cost microprocessor technology and current-generation graphics processing technology from Advanced Micro Devices, Sony PlayStation 4 will unlikely offer horsepower comparable to even today’s gaming PCs. However, the PS4 has a secret weapon that even high-end PCs will not sport for a couple of years: 8GB of GDDR5 memory. As it appears, game developers believe in this feature.“[PlayStation 4] is a perfect fit for the types of games we do, and we are confident that we will bring open-world gaming to a whole new level because of it. I...

Developers are currently taking receipt of a new PlayStation 4 dev kit, VG247 has been told today, with a final version slated to appear in January. Yes, it’ll have Blu-ray. No, it isn’t being made in Japan.Multiple sources have confirmed to VG247 today that a new version of the Orbis kit is now shipping to developers, and that it’s housed in a normal PC case. There are to be four versions of the dev kit, we were told. A previous version was essentially just a graphics card. The version shipping now is a “modified PC,” and the third version, appearing...

US startup Ouya has attracted $2.3m (£1.47m) of pledges for its Android-based games console, less than 24 hours after launching its campaign on crowdfunding website Kickstarter. Nearly 19,000 people have backed the project at the time of writing, and with 28 days still to go, it has a shot at rivalling the Pebble smart-watch, which attracted $10.3m of Kickstarter pledges earlier in 2012. Chief executive Julie Uhrman had told the Guardian that venture capital firms had been skittish about the prospects for the Ouya console, leading the company to raise its seed funding from family and friends, before turning to...

There was a showdown between the Nintendo Wii and the Sony PlayStation 3 at The Post's game testing lab last weekend. Here's how it went down: I invited a bunch of my friends, five guys and three gals, over to check out the new systems. Few of them play or care about video games, but they were all curious to see the PlayStation 3, the cutting-edge game console that sparked real-world mayhem on its release Friday. By comparison, most of my friends arrived having heard little about Nintendo's new system. But, as it turned out, that device was the hit...
