Russell Brand has long been one of my favorite celebrities, and not just because he sings Can’t Fight This Feeling to Alec Baldwin in what is probably my guiltiest of pleasure movies (I KNOW IT’S TRASH LEAVE ME ALONE IN MY 80’S GLAM DUMPSTER). He has consistently been an advocate for respect, kindness, and the open exchange of ideas, and that’s remarkable enough among us common folk, let alone Hollywood celebrities. A longtime advocate for the underdog and critic of the elites keeping said underdogs, well, under, Brand has recently found himself under fire for championing the wrong underdog and...

A national secular organization is in a frenetic push to ensure that the voices of atheists, agnostics and “freethinkers” are heard in statehouses across the country and in the presidential election in the fall. The Secular Coalition of America plans to have statewide chapters in virtually all 50 states by the end of 2012. “Recently, we’ve seen some of the most egregious bills commingling religion and government at the state level,” spokeswoman Lauren Youngblood said. “If we’re going to fight some of this stuff, we have to fight it at state capitols.” The D.C.-based group, which will outline its plans...

...Much of what passes for "Freethought" and "Freethinking" today is, in reality, atheism wearing a very thin disguise....In that case, it is clear that what is meant by Freethought is adhering to absolute materialism. If a Judeo-Christian cannot be a freethinker then freethought is not freethought but demands adherences to certain restrictive parameters. Yet, since the Judeo-Christian can think beyond, for example, materialistic parameters we can be true freethinkers. Atheists who have commandeered the term Freethought complain that Christians cannot be Freethinkers because they adhere to the Christian worldview. Yet, they commit the same alleged fallacy by adhering to atheism...

Stroll by the Capitol building at Little Rock, Arkansas, and you'll come across an unlikely duo: A traditional nativity scene next to an eight-foot "freethinkers" display which features noted freethinkers including Bill Gates, Albert Einstein, Mark Twain, and Thomas Jefferson, among others. The nativity scene has been on display during the holidays for more than 50 years; the freethinkers display was slated to be in place yesterday. For several years, the Arkansas Society of Freethinkers had requested that it be allowed to put up a display celebrating the Winter Solstice and freethinkers next to the nativity scene. Arkansas officials denied...

“Mr. President, we have a situation.” Those are, of course, among the most chilling words in the English language. The gathering of White House staffers in the Oval Office immediately fell silent when they heard White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel speak them...

Indonesians demonstrate in support of the visit of U.S. George Bush during a rare show of support in an area where anti-Bush protests have been held almost daily Wednesday Nov. 15, 2006, in Bogor, Indonesia. Student and Islamic groups have been making nearly daily demonstrations against an upcoming visit to Indonesia by Bush who will also visit Singapore and attend the APEC meeting in Vietnam

The American Atheists organization says President Bush should stop urging prayer for Hurricane Katrina victims because it violates the Constitution. Ellen Johnson, president of the group said Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco and Bush "should not be violating the Constitution by telling people to pray for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. It's unconstitutional for government officials to be promoting religion; and besides, judging from the speed of some relief efforts, officials should be busy working instead of preaching."

Two score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we now live, stood upon the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and issued a decree to all Americans. In his speech, he mentioned "Negroes" and "Americans" and his desire that one day the two should become one. In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. felt it was time "to lift our nation from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood." One brotherhood. It seems to me that no matter where I go or what I do, I am a hyphenated American. If I were to become...
