The app reportedly causing all of these issues is MacKeeper. Ironically, MacKeeper is designed to keep Macs safe from malware by offering cleaning, security, privacy, and performance tools. Yikes. According to the Elastic Security Labs report, 48% of Macs end up being infected with malware from MacKeeper.

  • Let the Free Republic site create the Title, Author, Date, and Source, given the Source URL

I'd like the ability to post by entering only the Source URL, clicking a button and having software populate the entries of Title, Author, Date Published, and Source. The user would still supply Topics and Keywords (if any). This would be optional -- the user could still fill out the fields as is done now. It's good to have diversity of sites. Free Republic is text-heavy, which makes it easy and fast to scan many posts. But I do think the suggested feature would make it easier to use, like Reddit, where if you enter a URL, it generates a...

I am getting a website security error on this website starting today. The first time I am seeing such an error. The website’s security certificate is not yet valid or has expired. Error Code: DLG_FLAGS_SEC_CERT_DATE_INVALID Has anyone encountered this? It keeps logging me out repeatedly. It seems that the website security certificate expired today. Please confirm. Thanks.
  • Can someone with Tampermonkey userscripts experience help please? (vanity)

I have Tampermonkey installed and enabled, and I use Firefox Quantum. There are some userscripts related to Twitter that I can verify DO work correctly, such as "Dowload Twitter Videos" But the userscript I really want to get working is called "Twitter Filter" https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/34646-twitter-filter Here is some background info. -I used to have greasemonkey scripts working, but they stopped working (possibly about the same time that I installed Tampermonkey?) -So I dis-abled greasemonkey, and only have the Tampermonkey engine enabled at the moment. -There is no way in he11 I want to ever LOGIN to Twitter and use their twitter-supplied...
  • Zuckerberg wants Facebook to build a creepy mind-reading machine

If you're concerned about Facebook's privacy scandals or worried that it's listening in on your phone calls, you'll likely be disturbed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg's recent comments at Harvard. Despite the fact that Facebook is under fire from Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. and facing more skepticism from the public about its business practices, the tech giant's chief executive officer discussed the company's research into a brain-computer interface that would allow people to use their mind to navigate through augmented reality. Even though this might sound creepy, don't worry, Zuckerberg said they have no current plans to develop surgically implanted chips. The idea...
  • Windows 10 Question: Keeping Microsoft From Receiving Data

    01/16/2019 2:45:54 AM PST · by ducttape45 · 37 replies
Hello fellow FReepers and anti-Microsoft enthusiasts. Lately I was following a blog here and I followed the instructions of some of where I installed Windows 10 Release 1607, and was able to keep it from updating past that by installing WinAero Tweak. So far so good, after a week it has not updated past that release. Drivers updated just fine and I turned off most of the telemetry items that one can turn off and uninstalled all of the junk software. But I'm trying to find someway of blocking any lingering telemetry that may be leaking to Microsoft, if possible....

Dr. Epstein : I can't even begin to emphasize how important it is to you, to NOT use GMail. The problem is so extensive, its hard to condense into a sentence or two. But the point is, they're taking that information, not just from the emails you send, but even from the drafts, those crazy drafts, that you just decide not to send, that all becomes part of your personal profile. If you're mentioning other people, that goes into THEIR personal profiles. If someone writes back to you from some other email service, well it doesn't matter, they're monitoring that...
  • Use rel="nofollow" for specific links

    08/17/2018 3:53:34 PM PDT · by T Ruth · 10 replies
"Nofollow" provides a way for webmasters to tell search engines "Don't follow links on this page" or "Don't follow this specific link." *** it lets you easily instruct robots not to crawl a specific link. For example: sign inHow does Google handle nofollowed links? In general, we don't follow them. This means that Google does not transfer PageRank or anchor text across these links. Essentially, using nofollow causes us to drop the target links from our overall graph of the web. However, the target pages may still appear in our index if other sites link to them without using nofollow,...
  • Problem when FreeRepublic.com password changed

I changed my password. When I entered by new password for logging in, it rejected it. What happened is that my password was too long, and it truncated when I changed. But it did not warn me. I use a 'robot' for passwords, so I can have 'long passwords'. I figured out how the password was truncated (the length it needed to be). When I truncated the password, the new password worked. It is my opinion that the 'focus' software should have warned me that the password was too long.

I have a general software query I'm hoping someone can help me with. I'm trying to find, if something even exists, a plugin or add-in for Microsoft Outlook that I can use that can give me a "File Explorer" -ish look and feel to the program. I have lots of emails I'm trying to go through and if I had something that made navigating the thousands of emails I got more easily it would make my job a lot more pleasant. And please, this is a serious request, so no snarky remarks about using other programs and no Microsoft haters....

  • What's wrong with "smart quotes" and possibly how to fix it (Vanity)

So, I'm still seeing smart quotes mess up. There was a thread a little while ago whereby I said what the problem was, but it's still extant. Here's the problem: All the web-tier stuff is using UTF-8 (which is a great idea), but *something*, probably the database tier, is using CP-1252. I suspect either: a) Database table for posts on SQL Server is set to collate and/or store the windows-1252/CP-1252 character set. or b) something between the web level and the DB level is doing character set interpretation in an incorrect way. There's 1252 in there somewhere, and that's what's...

But when it came to his university application he faced a serious disappointment for the first time in his glittering career. He was rejected by six of the seven Ivy League colleges to which he applied. “I saw people less qualified than me get better offers,”...
