Marvel and Disney are once again courting controversy by casting a female actress to take on the typically male “Fantastic Four” role of the Silver Surfer in the upcoming reboot. Actress Julia Garner has been picked to play a female version of the iconic comic book character and Herald of Galactus, Deadline magazine reported. Sources told the outlet that the Emmy-winning “Ozark” star will play the Shalla-Bal version of the Silver Surfer from the comics. Bounding Into Comics reported that Marvel Studios dived deep into the comic book lore to find justification to not use the Norrin-Radd version of the...

Hi guys, I was just wondering if anybody had seen Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. I saw it this weekend and I liked it a lot. The movie vastly improved on the original and included some terrific adventure. The film is very humorous by showing the squabbling relationships among the four heroes without diverting from the mythic atmosphere and storyline. The Silver Surfer is a wonderful character, though I wish that they showed more of him. The final battle with Doctor Doom is awesome. The film took many elements from some of the classic storylines in the comic...
  • COMIC BOOK VANITY

Just a simple vanity of something I thought funny and ironic and wanted to share. From time to time, I go to the Marvel website and check out new stuff. They have a feature where you can read old and new comics online. I opened up an old Strange Tales featuring the Human Torch of the Fantastic Four. He is fighting some costumed character with the name of Destroyer - not the Destroyer that would later fight Thor. Anyway, the plot has the villian working for the coummunists (this story is from the early 60's). At the end when the...

Hollywood's problems at the box office last year may come down not so much to quality (or the lack thereof), as many have supposed, but to taste. There are plenty of talented craftsman in Hollywood, but—and this will come as no surprise—the prevailing tastes in Hollywood may not match those of the general movie-going public. Just look at the films that people actually went to see last year, and compare that list to what Hollywood is now recognizing as 2005's best. The 15 top-grossing films released in 2005, in descending order, were: Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith; Harry...

Just asking... anyone see it? I'd like to know how any FReepers liked it. I read a ton of their comic books, esp. the John Byrne ones, many moons ago. So... flame on! -- Joe
