Foreign Minister Lieberman has not ruled out the possibility of a unilateral Israeli withdrawal from much of Judea and Samaria, Yisrael Hayom reports. Lieberman’s stance - as expressed in closed-door meetings - was compared to that of Defense Minister Ehud Barak. Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert also raised the possibility of a major withdrawal in the region. Lieberman, however, conditioned his approval for a withdrawal on two things: that Israel’s security interests would not be harmed, and that the international community would recognize the move as legitimate. He rejected the idea, raised by Barak, that Israelis living in areas affected...

A new law in North Carolina means you could face a fine and criminal charges if you ignore a mandatory evacuation order. The law passed in this year’s General Assembly and goes into effect October 1st. It makes it a class-two misdemeanor to not leave when ordered to do so. Those who stay could be fined up to $1,000 and be removed from their homes.

An IDF soldier was accused of refusing to participate in an exercise that was conducted several days before the evacuation of five buildings in the Ulpana neighborhood in Beit El that were designed to deal with the aftermath of the evacuation. The exercise was designed to teach soldiers how to handle “price tag” actions by youths opposed to the evacuation. Channel Two reported that the soldier refused to participate, telling commanders that this was not what he had joined the IDF for. The soldier was ejected from a commanders' course he was enrolled in....

There’s no calm before the storm. As frenzied New Yorkers emptied grocery stores, grabbed at every last flashlight and evacuated their homes, the MTA shut down its entire transit system in anticipation of Irene walloping the city. The storm is on track to strike east of the five boroughs by 8 a.m. Transit workers began the arduous system halt — the first weather-related one in history — at noon. Bus and subway service might not get moving until well into Monday afternoon. The apocalyptic standstill leaves five million riders without a way around.

As Hurricane Irene steamrolled up the East Coast Saturday morning, weakening slightly in intensity but still packing a dangerous punch, Mayor Bloomberg urged those living in low-lying areas to flee - before it is too late. The ferocious storm was downgraded to a Category 1 after it slammed into North Carolina, but its landfall in New York is still expected to produce winds of 75 mph and a powerful storm surge that could flood much of the city's coast. "It is going to be a very serious thing," Mayor Bloomberg said at a press conference on Coney Island, one of...

Maher says 'nobody' in Japan gov't was in charge early in nuclear crisis By Mari Yamaguchi National Aug. 19, 2011 - 02:30PM JST ( 54 ) TOKYO — Early in the Fukushima nuclear crisis, U.S. officials felt that nobody in Japan’s government was taking charge, and Washington considered evacuating American troops in a worst-case scenario, a retired U.S. envoy said Thursday. When the March 11 earthquake and tsunami set off the crisis by crippling the Fukushima Daiichi plant and sending it toward meltdown, Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s administration initially acted as if it was only the plant operator’s problem, not...
