This picturesque community among the redwoods, once dubbed "the Berkeley of the north" for its reputation for unabashed liberalism, has repeatedly thumbed its nose at the federal government. Over the years, its civic leaders have declared this city a sanctuary for military resisters to the Persian Gulf War and barred local enforcement of the Patriot Act. If they had had enough pull, President George W. Bush would have been impeached at least once. Now Arcata is at it again, with a law blocking the military from recruiting anybody in town under the age of 18. And this time, the law...

Things are looking good for those setting up residence in the little town of "Eureka." Sources close to SciFi Channel say the show -- as expected -- is looking at an almost definite third season following strong viewership numbers in the first part of the show's second season which included some larger sets and new faces. The second season premiere last summer drew in 2.5 million viewers, down from the near 4 million who tuned in for the pilot -- but that was the largest audience to ever tune in for an original series episode on SciFi Channel at the...

SCI FI Channel took one giant step toward expanding its original series offerings on July 18, with the 2-hour series premiere of Eureka drawing over 4 million viewers. The new series earned a 3.2 average household rating, tying the July 2004 premiere of Stargate Atlantis but exceeding it in viewers. Eureka is now the highest rated series telecast in SCI FI Channel history, the network boasts. The premiere was also the most-watched cable program on Tuesday, and the highest-rated and most-watched premiere telecast of a cable original series in Tuesday prime time so far this year. Starring Colin Ferguson ("The...

THE scientist who led the team that cracked the human genome is to publish a book explaining why he now believes in the existence of God and is convinced that miracles are real. Francis Collins, the director of the US National Human Genome Research Institute, claims there is a rational basis for a creator and that scientific discoveries bring man “closer to God”. His book, The Language of God, to be published in September, will reopen the age-old debate about the relationship between science and faith. “One of the great tragedies of our time is this impression that has been...

ATWOOD, Kan. - A hundred and forty years after the Homestead Act helped populate the American West, small towns in Kansas are turning to it again, to draw new residents and new economic development. Three hours east of Denver, Atwood, Kansas is losing ground. Census figures from 2000 showed 1,279 people living there, about a hundred fewer than in 1994. So, back in November, city leaders decided to offer home-sized lots for free to anyone willing to build. "I'm getting interest from every state of the union and Mexico," said Arlene Bliss, director of economic development for Rawlins County, KS....

McKINLEYVILLE -- Alex Nicoll scored his biggest touchdown Friday. A former football player and wrestler at McKinleyville High School, Nicoll returned home after being severely wounded almost three months ago in Iraq. Nicoll securely planted himself inside the gate at the Eureka/Arcata Airport, waved to friends and then smiled. Like he always does. "I may not have made it back in one piece, but I made it back," he said after embracing his younger brother Will and several friends. An infantry and urban warfare specialist in the 3rd Battalion of the 1st Marine Division, Lance Cpl. Nicoll lost the lower...

Well, fellow freepers our rally was a great sucess. First we arrived at the National Guard Armory in Eureka at about 8:00 am to send off our troops. I swear half of the city turned out. Our congressman Bagdad Mike Thompson was there and I took the opportunity to give him a piece of my mind. He is a real jerk folks let me tell you. I dont think he stayed long and I suspect he got an earful from other people as well. There was about four anti-war people there, but they were by and large ignored. When everybody...
