  • Building the Machine – interviews with parents re: Common Core

I've been campaigning against Common Core for six years -– this VIDEO is one of the best things I've seen. A bit long at 22 minutes but please watch it all. Yes, you'll be depressed and may even cry. This video confirms my sense that we should cancel Common Core entirely. Don't discuss or negotiate. The people behind Common Core are far-leftists. They will keep lying and manipulating. I don't imagine they will negotiate in good faith. ----- (My own most recent article is called "Common Core fulfills an ugly dream." It gives an historical perspective. On Examiner.com. Just Google...

The perverted habit of glorifying people like Mumia Abu-Jamal has been part of tedious campus “radicalism” for the past 45 years. Still, I can’t get too worked up over the fact that a bunch of twits at Goddard College invited a murderer to their school. For one, these sorts of incidents help me compile a list of schools for my kids to avoid. What is interesting, though, is how academics and administrators continue to rationalize moronic behavior: “As a reflection of Goddard’s individualized and transformational educational model,” Goddard College Interim President Bob Kenny explained, “…choosing Mumia as their commencement speaker,...
  • Student Loan Bubble Blowback: Morgan Stanley Warns Average Debtor Can't Get A Mortgage

Via Morgan Stanley,Amid rising tuition costs, an increasing share of students rely on debt to fund their education. Student loan delinquent balances have been on the rise since the early 2000s and those with student loans are likely to be less credit worthy than those without (Exhibit 50 & Exhibit 51). As a result, consumption for the student debt-laden population may be depressed. To be sure, the share of consumption driven by college age consumers has been in decline since 2003.These challenges are further compounded under the Qualified Mortgage (QM) regulatory regime that became effective in January 2014. The...

When dealing with biological hazards at this level the use of a positive pressure personnel suit, with a segregated air supply is mandatory. The entrance and exit of a level four biolab will contain multiple showers, a vacuum room, an ultraviolet light room, and other safety precautions designed to destroy all traces of the biohazard. Multiple airlocks are employed and are electronically secured to prevent both doors from opening at the same time. All air and water service going to and coming from a biosafety level 4 (or P4) lab will undergo similar decontamination procedures to eliminate the possibility of...
  • Contacts for a class trip to New York for a student who is exceptional

My son's school is taking a trip to New York in May. All students are invited to attend. I asked the counselor if there were any grants available for students who were part of families who couldn't swing it and was told there were no grants available for this trip, unfortunately...so I was wondering if anyone would have any suggestions for contacts who would want to encourage a student who is such a gifted student. The boy is in Advanced placement classes (since the 4th grade), he is on the A/B honor roll. He has medical issues such as JRA(since...

What does it indicate about how knowledge of current affairs is shaped?A Pew Research Center survey of 1,002 adults measured Americans' knowledge of key facts in the news - you can test yourself on the same 12 questions Pew asked the US public in this quiz.Several questions were answered correctly by less than half the respondents, some by less than 30%.While it's difficult to compare like with like, you might not necessarily expect citizens of other nations to answer equivalent questions correctly, either. But the study does offer an...

We recently laid out the best jobs for pay raises and growth — a new report from financial tools startup SmartAsset. While half of the top 10 careers were in healthcare — showing that these professionals can easily and quickly move up and make more — a recent report from PayScale found that this most definitely isn't an industry-wide trend. In fact, healthcare jobs dominated PayScale's list of the worst professions for salary growth. To compile its ranking of jobs with the slowest salary growth, PayScale examined the median pay for over 2,000 professions over a 20-year period. They found...

JACKSON, MI – It is not fully accurate to say the statewide campaign being waged by Jonathan Williams of Jackson is flying under the radar. More accurately, it is not clear that any radar exists for his race. "It's the weirdest campaign you can imagine," said Williams, a Republican nominee for the State Board of Education. He will be on the November ballot everywhere in Michigan, and almost no voter will recognize him or his opponents. An abiding love of politics may be necessary to seek an office like the State Board of Education, and Williams definitely has that working...

Apparently some of the young, in addition to not reading, can’t even be bothered to watch a classic film, even when they purport to have an interest in films. John Nolte at Breitbart gives us the grim details: Monday we learned that a 25 year-old taking graduate-level journalism classes at New York University had no idea what an editorial was. Today we learn that “most” of the students taking a film class at Georgetown University have never seen “Gone with the Wind.” [W]hen I asked 13 students in a Georgetown University film class if they’d seen it, most either hadn’t...

Anybody else download and install the Windows 10 preview? I am using it now. I haven't noticed any major hiccups yet, speed and responsiveness is great. Having the live tiles and apps in the start menu is great, especially since you can now use the apps in a window. I also noticed my apps from my old WinRT tablet show and work in x86.

After a successful summer engaging poets near and far, the University of Iowa International Writing Program (IWP) will launch its second Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), How Writers Write Fiction, on Friday, Sept. 26.The course, taught entirely on the Internet through the use of recorded video lectures, is designed to reach an unlimited number of participants. The first UI MOOC, How Writers Write Poetry, had just over 4,500 participants by the end of the course; the fiction MOOC should easily surpass that number. “The International Writing Program has developed the University of Iowa’s first MOOCs, and the university has...

A teenage girl in Wyoming learned a harsh lesson on why you shouldn't play hooky. Jeannie Crutchfield did the unthinkable when she got word of her daughter ditching class: She followed her through her school with a camera in hand, recording her every move to make sure she attended class - and then posted the video to Facebook. "It was kind of just spur of moment. It was yeah know. I debated whether I was going to do it or not and I was like I'm just going to do it," Crutchfield told ABC affiliate KTWO. Crutchfield says she wanted to...

Talking Back to Goliath: Some Advice for Students in the Evolutionary Biology Classroom Paul Nelson September 30, 2014 2:18 PM | Permalink A student in David Barash's animal-behavior class at the University of Washington might feel a bit like David facing Goliath -- even though Goliath, in this case, happens to be named David. Goliath occupies the podium at the front of the class, holds the professorship, and has the authority of the scientific community (apparently, anyway) on his side. And, like the biblical Goliath, he is confidently outspoken when he delivers what Barash in this past Sunday's NY Times...

Today’s students are being crushed with John Bunyan’s proverbial burden on their backs – student loan debt. Until relatively recently this debt could have been discharged in bankruptcy. Then all that changed when Sallie Mae, the Student Loan Marketing Association, was privatized in 2004. Albert Lord, the new CEO, and his lobbyists went to work to change the laws so that student loans could not be discharged in bankruptcy. Today the cumulative student loan debt is more than $1 trillion. While a generation ago a high school diploma was considered sufficient for a decent middle class entry level job, today...

Education is supposed to help bridge the gap between the wealthiest people and everyone else. […] Wealthier parents have been stepping up education spending so aggressively that they’re widening the nation’s wealth gap. When the Great Recession struck in late 2007 and squeezed most family budgets, the top 10 percent of earners—with incomes averaging $253,146—went in a different direction: They doubled down on their kids’ futures. Their average education spending per child jumped 35 percent to $5,210 a year during the recession compared with the two preceding years—and they sustained that faster pace through the recovery. For the remaining 90...

COMPTON (CBSLA.com) — Two Compton elementary schools were named Tuesday as winners of the National Blue Ribbon School Award by Education Secretary Arne Duncan. Jefferson and Tibby elementary schools, part of the Compton Unified School District, were chosen for the honor, which recognizes high-performing students and best practices in teaching. A total of 337 schools nationwide received the awards. Both schools were awarded in the category of “Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools.” According to the Department of Education, both schools have a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students — 94 percent at Jefferson and 87 percent at Tibby. The U.S....
