The Obama administration is considering imposing a forced quarantine on healthcare workers who return to the United States from the Ebola hot zone of West Africa, after a New York doctor who treated patients there tested positive for the virus on Thursday. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spokesman Tom Skinner told Reuters on Friday that a mandatory quarantine is one possible plan under discussion by officials from across the administration. 'There are a number of options being discussed pertaining to the monitoring and mobility of healthcare workers who are returning to the United States from affected countries,' Skinner said.

The governors of New York and New Jersey announced Friday afternoon that they were ordering all people entering the country through two area airports who had direct contact with Ebola patients in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea to be quarantined. The announcement comes one day after an American doctor, who had worked in Guinea and returned to New York City earlier in October, tested positive for Ebola and became the first New York patient of the deadly virus. “A voluntary Ebola quarantine is not enough,” said Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York. “This is too serious a public health...

During Thursday’s hearings on Ebola, Congressman Cory Gardner questioned the panel of five witnesses. Some important pieces of information were revealed. Let’s start with the numbers. There are about 150 people a day flying to the United States from countries in West Africa most impacted by Ebola. All incoming flights connect through other countries. Ninety-four percent of these travelers will receive enhanced screening. Curious about the 94% figure, I did some research and learned that enhanced screening will be implemented at the five international airports that “manage more than 94 percent of travelers from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea….”...

MANILA, Philippines–The government has begun requiring a 21-day screening for Filipinos in Ebola-hit countries in West Africa before they would be allowed to travel to the Philippines, Health Secretary Enrique Ona said on Monday. Once cleared, returning Filipinos will be covered by a “no regrets” policy requiring observation for another 21 days in the Philippines to make sure they had not contracted the deadly virus, he said. During the second phase, Ona said Filipinos coming from Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone would be asked to inform local health authorities by cell phone of possible Ebola virus symptoms such as fever,...

President Obama is expected to meet with top health and security officials on Monday to consider whether to launch additional screening at U.S. airports for some travelers arriving from Ebola-stricken African nations. Two top U.S. health officials confirmed to Fox News on Monday that they were looking at those options as they try to contain the Ebola virus. "What will be discussed at the White House is the issue of entry screening," Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said. He explained that the first line of defense right now is for travelers to...
  • Ebola in mind, US colleges screen some students

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — College students from West Africa may be subject to extra health checks when they arrive to study in the United States as administrators try to insulate campuses from the worst Ebola outbreak in history. With the virus continuing to kill in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, the expected arrival of thousands of students from those countries has U.S. authorities on alert but cautioning against alarm. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued no specific recommendations for colleges, some state health departments, including in South Carolina and North Dakota, have spelled out for...
