McCarrick Report at Odds with Cardinal Wuerl’s Claims of IgnoranceCardinal Wuerl’s denials of any prior knowledge about McCarrick’s alleged conduct are apparently contradicted by multiple accounts in the report.WASHINGTON — The McCarrick Report sheds new light on when former Archbishop of Washington, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, knew of allegations made against his predecessor, and what steps he and Vatican officials took to monitor or restrict McCarrick’s travel and residence. The 450-page report, published on Tuesday, examines the “institutional knowledge and decision-making” regarding Theodore McCarrick, the former cardinal found guilty of sexual abuse of minors and seminarians in 2019 and laicized after...

People are free to raise questions about certain teachings but should remember Peter is the rock of the Catholic faith, according to the Archbishop of Washington, Cardinal Donald Wuerl. Wuerl was in Orlando for the July 1-4 “Convocation of Catholic Leaders,” and spoke with Crux about the impact of the pontificate of Pope Francis.“We are 50 years after the [Second Vatican] Council. What’s happening is all that Pentecostal energy that the Council unleashed is now, with this Holy Father, being felt,” Wuerl said. “It has taken a long time, but the Church moves very slowly solidifying, clarifying, reaffirming her teaching....

Do you remember the two shocking synods in October of 2014 and 2015? Lots and lots of controversy as it became increasingly clear that something completely crooked was going on. One of the leading behind the scenes characters was Washington D.C.'s Cdl. Donald Wuerl, who kept pushing the ridiculous notion that you can change the practice of something without causing a change in the doctrine — sort of like they don't really have anything to do with each other. Sure they don't. Among various cardinals and archbishops, Wuerl was out front in describing the synods as what he termed a...

A high-ranking priest in New Hampshire has been stripped of his priestly faculties and imprisoned over an embezzlement scandal involving his gay lovers. The diocese of Manchester made the announcement Friday about Edward J. Arsenault III, whose faculties were removed by the Vatican on February 28. The former monsignor is under house arrest for a 2014 conviction for embezzling funds to support his homosexual partners.  Arsenault pled guilty to all charges, including writing checks to himself and his brother amounting to $23,000 from the estate of Msgr. John Molan. He also billed the diocese $184,000 for lavish meals, cell phones and computer equipment...

‘Why doesn’t the Church do something about this?” The woman who met me as I stood outside of church greeting people was waving a newspaper article that recounted some legislative body’s recent approval of physician-assisted suicide. This was not the first time in 50 years as a priest and 30 as a bishop that I was confronted by men and women annoyed at what they perceived was the silence of “the Church.” What they are all really asking is, “Why don’t bishops and priests do more politically?” Why are priests and bishops not more engaged in the political issues that...
