Police in Maine said a small dog was to blame for driving its owners pickup truck into a lake by knocking the vehicle out of gear. The Ellsworth Police Department said the Yorkie's owner had been walking the dog around Branch Lake Saturday afternoon and he put the canine back into his pickup truck while it was idling. Lt. Harold Page told the Ellsworth American the dog "knocked the truck out of gear and it rolled down the parking lot into the lake." The Ellsworth Police Department said in a Facebook post the dog was rescued from the submerged pickup...

Dogs are becoming more intelligent and are even learning morals from human contact, scientists claim. They say the fact that dogs' play rarely escalates into a fight shows the animals abide by social rules. During one study, dogs which held up a paw were rewarded with a food treat. When a lone dog was asked to raise its paw but received no treat, the researchers found it begged for up to 30 minutes. But when they tested two dogs together but rewarded only one, the dog which missed out soon stopped playing the game. Dr Friederike Range, of the University...

A loyal dog stayed by her pal's side for a WEEK after she got trapped in a ravine. Bassett hound Phoebe and setter mix Tillie went missing from their home in Washington State, US, on September 8. Appeals by the worried owners were unsuccessful until residents near some woodland saw a reddish dog approach them and then head off down to ravine to sit by the side of its fellow canine which was trapped on an old concrete cistern.

enty-nine dogs that were once part of a "meat farm" in South Korea arrived Thursday in San Diego for possible adoption, part of a Humane Society program that hopes to end the Korean tradition of eating dog meat. "The dog meat trade is one of the most horrific forms of cruelty," said Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of the San Diego Humane Society. The Humane Society International has taken possession of more than 100 dogs from a South Korean farmer in recent months, paying the farmer to transition to other crops, according to news coverage in Korea. The dogs have...

A French bulldog named Simba is probably alive today because of the attentiveness of an Air Canada pilot. Simba was flying via Air Canada Flight 85 from Tel Aviv to Toronto when the pilot noticed a problem with the cargo area’s heating system, according to CNN Canadian affiliate City News. Simba’s owner, German Kontorovich, was in the cabin. “As soon as the crew became aware of the temperature issue, the captain grew rightfully concerned for the dog’s comfort and well-being,” Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick told CNN via email. “With the altitude it can become very uncomfortable, and possibly the...
  • Have humans made dogs STUPID? Pets are 'lazy thinkers' compared to wild wolves

They may be man's best friend, but dogs have little to thank humans for it seems. Research suggests the domesticated pets can't solve problems as well as their wild cousins because living with us has made them 'incapable of thinking for themselves.' In tests, experts presented a 'puzzle box' containing food to a group of dogs, and a group of wolves and while the wolves were capable of breaking inside, the dogs looked to humans for help.

A Renton house cat seems to think he's a dog, and his exploits on local hiking trails is earning him celebrity status online. Move over birds and hikers; there's a new cat in town, and he walks the backcountry trails like any hiking dog would -- like he was born to hike. "We think he might be part dog," said Anna Wilson. His name is Paddington. His parents, Bryan and Anna Wilson, got him at the Seattle Humane Society as a kitten last summer, where they instantly detected his courageous spirit and their connection. "Kittens can be cute and cuddly...

University of Florida scientists warn against letting your dog swim in warm water bodies after they found several lakes with a pathogen that can make canines sick. Animals, including dogs and horses, can contract pythiosis from swimming spores, said Erica Goss, a UF/IFAS assistant professor of plant pathology. About 10 cases of humans getting sick from this disease have also been reported in the U.S. In addition to keeping their animals out of lakes, people should avoid ponds and other standing water that contains grass and aquatic vegetation, particularly in the hot months, Goss said.

When Denver was rescued in Detroit about a year ago, he was near death. But a man who had been assisted by Dog Aide, a community awareness group that supports pet owners, thought they might be able to save him. And they did. Katelin Thomas, who works with Dog Aide and owns K9 Turbo Training, says when they first saw Denver, they didn't think he could survive in his condition. His body was so stiff that his legs could not even be separated for them to be able to tell if he was male or female, so they simply called...

I know some on FR have a bias against Pit Bulls, but they are the nicest animals on Earth, IMO. Also I will probably get banned for stating this, but the crazy liberal Huffington Post should be congratulated for their advocacy of pit bulls. I am a Trump/Cruz leaning conservative, but don't understand the hatred against this breed.

You may think your dog has an irrational hatred of cats, but their instinct to chase felines out of their territory might be more reasonable than you think. Fossils have revealed the two species have a rocky past after the introduction of cats to the Americas had a devastating effect on the continent's species of wild dogs. In fact, it is thought that competition from cats caused up to 40 species of dog to become extinct in the region millions of years ago.

I sat back inquisitively, watching in amazement as Howard Meyer of Chipewa Kennels and dog trainer, handled his dogs with utmost patience. “C’mon, Violet, get in, get in here,” Meyer encouraged in a soft voice. Sure enough, Violet waded into the water and got into the canoe on her own. As Meyer began paddling across the small river, two other adult dogs followed, swimming by his side. Two pups, eight-month-old brothers, hesitated at first, but their anticipation mounted the further away Meyer and the other dogs got. “C’mon, hop in … C’mon,” Meyer kept enticing the pups in his calm...

Photos of a dog buried alive up to its head in France sparked an outpouring of anger on social media Wednesday, and police said the owner was taken into custody. The French mastiff was discovered and then rescued on Saturday by a man walking his own dog on waste ground in Carrieres-sur-Seine, west of Paris. The man posted pictures on Facebook saying: "Only her head was visible and it was difficult to see given the amount of earth covering her." A police source told AFP that the dog was surrounded by stones and her lead was attached to a sack...
