SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Democratic National Committee’s summer meeting here late last week was starkly different from the gathering of its Republican counterparts earlier in the month. There were no surefire news-making speakers like Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey or former Speaker Newt Gingrich, nor was there consideration of any made-for-cable-news resolutions, like one that tried to bar a pair of television networks from sponsoring future presidential debates. Rather, it was a sedate gathering where routine party business was conducted routinely by national and state Democratic officials in a suburban Phoenix resort.

“I would agree that voters need to be told where candidates stand, or pretend to stand, on their concerns,” he continued. “But a reporter who doesn’t quickly tell the readers what they most want to know — the score — won’t last long on the beat."

A new national poll from Quinnipiac University shows that a majority Democrats believe the federal government should bail out Detroit, but an even larger majority of Americans oppose such a move. Fifty-one percent of Democrats support Washington providing federal assistance to Detroit, which last month became the largest American city ever to seek bankruptcy protection. Not surprisingly, there is a strong partisan divide on the question of a federal bailout for the Motor City. Virginia attorney general and GOP gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli is back on the attack in a tight race with momentum swinging back and forth seemingly every week. Of late Mr. Cuccinelli has been trying to focus attention on the crony capitalism misadventures of his Democratic opponent, Terry McAuliffe. Yesterday the Obama administration announced through the Treasury Department that the employer mandate in the law requiring businesses with 50 or more employees to provide health insurance is being delayed until 2015 (after the 2014 midterm elections). The employer mandate was originally set to start in 2014 but it seems Democrats are extremely worried about another 2010 slaughter as a result of the legislation. But yesterday in response to Speaker John Boehner calling ObamaCare a train wreck, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz argued that the delay of the mandate means the law is here to stay "for the long haul."...

Deandre Poole will return to Florida Atlantic University after being placed on administrative leave.Florida Atlantic University has reinstated an instructor who had students stomp on pieces of paper with "Jesus" written on them as part of a lesson. The school announced Friday that 32-year-old Deandre Poole would return to teach summer classes, as well as the next academic year. DNC: Nearly $500,000 of equipment was lost or stolen in Charlotte To stage last year’s Democratic National Convention, the local host committee raised millions of dollars, much of it for computers, phones and other communication devices. Now it appears a sizable amount of that equipment was lost, stolen – or perhaps kept by the staffers it had been assigned to. The Democratic National Convention Committee said it recently sent the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department a spreadsheet detailing $496,000 worth of missing equipment. RIVERSIDE COUNTY: Democratic chairman apologizes for comment The chairman of the Riverside County Democratic Central Committee is apologizing for making a reference to Vaudeville-era character “Stepin Fetchit,” who some consider racially insensitive. The recruitment drive to join the Ku Klux Klan in Covington, Ga., is in full swing again as residents are being urged to join the brotherhood of White supremacists via fliers dropped outside their homes, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
