Before U.S. District Judge Joseph Hood in a Lexington courtroom, Paul was found in contempt of court for violating a 1997 permanent injunction signed by Hood, ordering Paul not to infringe on Kern's Kitchen Inc.'s trademark Derby-Pie. Paul also must pay Kern's Kitchen's attorney fees and costs. "I am disappointed with the judge's ruling and I accept it," Paul said today. "Our proof was considerably different than Derby...

Former Gov. Brereton Jones has borrowed heavily from a financially distressed bank that he and several other Democratic Party leaders founded in 2001, according to interviews and bank records. Federal regulators have criticized the directors of Frankfort-based American Founders Bank, including Jones, for inadequate supervision. The bank was badly managed and suffered "hazardous lending and lax collection practices," which left it with far too many unpaid loans, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Among the specific concerns cited was improper reporting and recordkeeping of insider loans to bank directors and executives. The FDIC issued a cease-and-desist order to the...

A sinus surgery lasted 21/2 hours. Four more were spent taking a bladder stone out of a show horse. Dean Richardson was still at a friend's equine hospital in Florida on May 20 as Barbaro, the Kentucky Derby winner, was saddled for the Preakness Stakes. Richardson wasn't going to miss the race. "He had blood all over him, and he was doing it in flip-flops, so we hosed him off," said Byron Reid, a veterinarian in Loxahatchee, Fla., just outside West Palm Beach. The two men watched the Preakness on a six-inch screen in the hospital. "You could see enough,"...

EAGLE POINT Remember when you were a kid and your parents told you, "If you want to get to know something really well, what you need to do is spend lots of time hanging around it"? Wrong. Kids, I'm here to tell you that if you really want to get to know a race horse named Brother Derek, Saturday's Kentucky Derby favorite, what you must do is meet with the Oregon rancher who bred and raised him, and stand around listening to stories about bull testicles. Before Brother Derek was given his registered name, he was called "Randall" at Gavel...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- As if custom-made hats, premium box seats and limo rides weren't enough, the Kentucky Derby will now feature the $1,000 mint julep. Sip this drink slowly. The sweet cocktail will be made with one of the state's finest bourbons and served in a gold-plated cup with a silver straw to the first 50 people willing to put down the cash at the May 6 race. Mint from Morocco, ice from the Arctic Circle and sugar from the South Pacific will put this mint julep in a class of its own, the distillery selling the drink said. "We...

Muslims rarely throw away leaflets containing possible extremist references because it is forbidden by their religion, a childhood friend of a failed Derby suicide bomber told a court. Irfan Bhatti, who befriended terrorist Omar Sharif when they were at Bemrose School together between 1988 and 1992, told the Old Bailey yesterday that he had such leaflets at home. But he denied that it meant he or anyone else with the literature held those same extremist views, the court heard. Omar Sharif, of Northumberland Avenue, Derby, failed to blow himself up in a busy bar in Tel Aviv in 2003. His...

...I am usually able to control my emotions. I'm an easygoing person. However, in this instance I completely lost it. The next thing I knew I was running toward Gore yelling at the top of my voice. "Gore, who do you think you are? What gives you the right to cause people to be treated like this?" I'm pretty sure I also threw in a few words describing his ancestry and his mothers marital status when he was born. Not one of my better moves. I later tried to imagine the Secret Service Agents watching a 350-pound sunburnt man, wearing...

In a second suit, the jockeys argued they should also be allowed to wear a patch with the name of their union, the 1,100-member Jockeys' Guild....
