Colorado's new immigration laws are starting to cause a stir among businessmen in the valley. For contractor Mark Gould one bill in particular could mean the loss of about a quarter of his workforce. Since House Bill 1343 took effect Aug. 7, Gould is now required to certify that he has no illegal workers on his payroll. The law applies to contractors working on projects for cities, counties, school districts and other governmental agencies. According to the law, new workers must be checked through a Pilot Program, which is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeland Security. The program...

YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO A RECEPTION FOR 7-year Old SAUL ARELLANO Guest speaker: EMMA LOZANO, Chicago Activist Saul Arellano, 7 years of age, is the son of Elvira Arellano, who has courageously defied inhumane immigration laws by resisting deportation and taking sanctuary at the Methodist Church in Chicago. Saul, her son, is a United States citizen, who like 3.2 million other children, faces the forced separation from his mother, an undocumented immigrant. Elvira has taken up the cry of 600,000 other women who are under deportation orders. Emma Lozano, Director of Pueblo Sin Fronteras, is a Chicago community activist...

Money transfers mounting U.S. encourages cash flow across border as tool to deter illegal immigration BINYAMIN APPELBAUM, RICK ROTHACKER AND FRANCO ORDOÑEZ Staff Writers To curb illegal immigration, the federal government has posted soldiers on the Mexican border, arrested workers at job sites, and talked about making it a felony to enter the U.S. without permission. But it puts greater hope in a relatively unknown and unlikely strategy: increasing the amount of money immigrants send back to Mexico. The Bush administration says the billions sent south each year can be used to build the Mexican economy, thereby reducing immigration. For...

UT 3: Cannon's Win Blunts Immigration Foes' Momentum By Michael Teitelbaum | 3:34 AM; Jun. 28, 2006 | Email This Article Five-term Rep. Chris Cannon won Tuesday’s Republican primary in Utah’s 3rd Congressional District by a comfortable margin, thwarting a determined effort by challenger John Jacob and some activist opponents of illegal immigration to cast him out because of his relatively moderate position on that hot-button issue. Cannon’s win — by 56 percent to 44 percent, with all precincts reporting — also was a political pick-me-up for President Bush, with whom Cannon is allied in supporting a nuanced approach on...

PROVO, Utah -- Rep. Chris Cannon is a loyal Republican with the endorsement of the National Rifle Association and a 100 percent rating from the American Conservative Union. He is unmarred by the ethical scandals that have roiled Washington in this election season.... Tuesday's matchup in Utah is viewed as a bellwether for how immigration issues play out nationwide. "If you want to throw the bums out, you can do that," Mr. Cannon said during his debate with Mr. Jacob earlier this month. Responded Mr. Jacob: "When you talk about throwing the bums out, I'm just working on one right...

Most Utahns feel a state law that allows undocumented students to pay in-state college tuition should be repealed, according to a new Salt Lake Tribune poll. Seventy-one percent of the 625 registered voters who were interviewed by telephone for the statewide poll this week said Utah should "repeal the current state law that offers the discounted resident college tuition rate to the children of undocumented immigrants." Ruth Bick, a 63-year-old Ogden resident, said Utahns should not have to pay taxes to subsidize a college education for undocumented students. The state's middle class already is burdened enough with big tax bills,...
