I am an assertive driver. Not aggressive, because that word is too aggressive. But I am decisive with speed. Still, if I’m attempting to merge and someone lets me in, I will roll down my window and wave to them. If it’s raining, I will just have a wet hand. I pray before meals. Not every meal. But meals with meat. I don’t ride city buses anymore, but when I did, I wouldn’t just give up my seat for women, elderly people and those who appear to have a physical disability, I wouldn’t even sit if the bus was packed...

The Root is obviously a hyperbolically racial magazine, since its slogan is "The Blacker the Content the Sweeter the Truth." It's not surprising that it frequently publishes writer Damon Young, author of the memoir "What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Blacker." We're told he asked important and dramatic questions like "Will this white person's potato salad kill me?" Young's memoir was honored as "required reading" by NPR and celebrated by Entertainment Weekly and The Washington Post, among others. He became a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times. The paranoia overflowed from this self-described "professional Black person" on St....

I don’t have much to add here today that hasn’t already been said. Whiteness is a public health crisis. It shortens life expectancies, it pollutes air, it constricts equilibrium, it devastates forests, it melts ice caps, it sparks (and funds) wars, it flattens dialects, it infests consciousnesses, and it kills people—white people and people who are not white, my mom included. There will be people who die, in 2050, because of white supremacy-induced decisions from 1850. A line can and should be drawn from the actions of the white supremacist who stalked into three Atlanta-area massage parlors yesterday, and allegedly...

I forget sometimes that Donald Trump is president. I’ve tried to convince myself that this is intentional; a willful misremembering of reality necessary to process his span in office. There’d be a nobility there, I think, as this would suggest I’m so empathetic, so down, so woke, that I can’t even sleep without tricking myself into amnesia.

Editor’s Note: This story contains spoilers for the film Black Panther. Black Panther’s Wakanda is a near-utopic vision of how a country could look; perhaps the best depiction of Afrofuturism ever captured on film. There were thriving and ideological-diverse cities surrounded by expansive and bucolic countrysides. There was modern technology perfectly weaved in to cultural tradition, a melding that was symbiotic instead of antagonistic. And while I didn’t see this happening during the movie, I’m sure Wakanda has amazing bottomless brunches. Unfortunately, a present-day attempt to recreate Wakanda would be unrealistic. Mainly because we’re roughly 20,000 years behind Wakandan tech....

The editor of a prominent black website wished death upon Republican nominee Donald Trump’s supporters for their political beliefs. Damon Young, a contributing editor for Ebony.com, wrote an op-ed Wednesday explaining why he’s voting for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, before writing he wants Trump supporters die. “Yes, you read that correctly. I want these mother******* to lose. And if losing what might be the last winnable election for them in a millennia isn’t enough for them to move into the 21st century, I wouldn’t terribly mind if they withered the **** away and died,” Young wrote for VerySmartBrothas.com Since Trump...

“Yes, you read that correctly. I want these mother***kers to lose,” Young continued. “And if losing what might be the last winnable election for them in a millennia isn’t enough for them to move into the 21st century, I wouldn’t terribly mind if they withered the f*** away and died.” Young said that he would write a thank you card to the Trump supporters afterward, adding that he wishes nothing positive for them.
