On Monday, Ross Douthat defended Sarah Palin in his op-ed “Scenes from a Marriage.” Sure, he took the position that the media ought to give up on Palin and get back to normal productive coverage of normal productive politicians. But he also aimed to extinguish any “possible link between Jared Lee Loughner’s crime and Palin’s martial campaign rhetoric.” The next day Palin took a spectacular dip in the polls, down to a 38% approval rating.
