BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Justice Department will establish its first civil rights unit in the southern state of Alabama, the agency said Tuesday -- a development that comes in the wake of the state's crackdown on illegal immigration, which raised concerns about Alabama's compliance with federal laws. . . The department's decision to place a civil rights unit in Alabama shows the state has problems guaranteeing legal equality years after the civil rights era ended, said Shay Farley, legal director of Alabama Appleseed, a public interest legal office based in Montgomery. "It highlights the fact that the war isn't over,"...

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has requested a retainer on the man arrested in the July 2011 fatal hit and run of a bicyclist in Seattle. Erlin Garcia Reyes, 28, of Normandy Park, was arrested for felony hit and run on Wednesday. ICE officials have confirmed to 97.3 KIRO-FM that Garcia-Reyes is in the country illegally. Police believe Reyes was the driver of an SUV that fatally struck and killed 44-year-old Michael Wang on July 28, 2011. The SUV hit Wang as the driver made a left turn on Dexter Ave. North in South Lake Union. The suspect fled the scene....

nternal documents obtained by the House Judiciary Committee show that the Obama administration has been “cooking the books” in order to reach their “record” number of deported illegal immigrants, chairman Rep. Lamar Smith said Friday. Based on the internal U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) document,s the number of removals are actually down, the opposite of what the administration has been claiming. According to the committee’s review, in 2011 officials at the Department of Homeland Security began including the number of individuals removed through the Alien Transfer Exit Program (ATEP) in its annual removal numbers. ATEP is a program which...

Illegal immigrants could receive more than $7 billion this year in federal tax credits, according to one estimate, thanks to a loophole in the law that allows people not authorized to work to reap the government payments with no questions asked. Sen. Jeff Sessions' office calculated that, based on recent trends, illegal immigrants could receive roughly $7.4 billion through a provision known as the Additional Child Tax Credit. That's more than quadruple what the payout was four years ago, but the payments have been steadily increasing over the past decade. Though illegal immigrants are prohibited from receiving similar tax credits,...

THE GOAL of attrition through law enforcement for illegal immigrants — or, to use the term Mitt Romney favors, “self-deportation” — has suffered a series of setbacks. The latest came Monday when a federal appeals court blocked major parts of Alabama’s draconian immigration law, including one that required public schools to collect information on pupils’ immigration status. It is increasingly clear that Republican state lawmakers and governors have gone too far in their campaign to harass and bully the nation’s 11 million illegal immigrants in the hope that they will simply disappear. Alabama has the distinction of having enacted the nation’s...

$585 million dollars. That is the estimate of what Obama’s new amnesty will cost the American taxpayer. This back door plan, put into action by imperial edict without any input from Congress, is just another nail in the coffin of our economy. This past week thousands of children of illegal immigrants were granted the right to apply for “deferred action” in order to stay in this country and sign up for employment opportunities. Starting August 15th, illegal aliens up to the age of 30 who meet certain requirements can begin submitting their applications that will allow them to remain in...

Dennis Lynch told me there were many revelations during the fourteen months he spent making They Come to America, his riveting documentary about illegal immigration. "I was shocked about how many Americans are furious but too afraid to speak on camera," he said in July when I interviewed him by phone. "I was surprised to learn people can't land jobs [in Miami] because they don't speak Spanish." The list of revelations is long, but the biggest: "At any given moment, we could have another 9/11." In the film, Arizona ranchers tell Lynch about the exhausted foreigners crossing over from Mexico...

For two years, Juana Reyes helped feed her two small children and pay her rent by selling tamales at the Walmart Supercenter parking lot on Florin Road. Now the undocumented single mom faces possible deportation for peddling her chicken, pork and chili cheese tamales. Reyes was arrested for trespassing June 28 after the store's security guard and Sacramento County sheriff's deputies said they repeatedly told her to take her tamales elsewhere. Reyes spent 12 days in the Sacramento County jail until the trespass charge was dropped, said her lawyer, Julia Vera, and her children – Cesar Cuesta, 10, and Monserrat...

Border Patrol agents in Arizona are blasting their bosses for telling them, along with all other Department of Homeland Security employees, to run and hide if they encounter an "active shooter." It's one thing to tell civilian employees to cower under a desk if a gunman starts spraying fire in a confined area, say members of Tucson Local 2544/National Border Patrol Council, but to give armed law enforcement professionals the same advice is downright insulting. The instructions from DHS come in the form of pamphlets and a mandatory computer tutorial. “We are now taught in an ‘Active Shooter’ course that...

The Obama administration said Monday it is suspending existing agreements with Arizona police over enforcement of federal immigration laws, and said it has issued a directive telling federal authorities to decline many of the calls reporting illegal immigrants that the Homeland Security Department may get from Arizona police. Administration officials, speaking on condition they not be named, told reporters they expect to see an increase in the number of calls they get from Arizona police — but that won’t change President Obama’s decision to limit whom the government actually tries to detain and deport. “We will not be issuing detainers...

This article if from April. I didn't see it posted on FR. I am posting it upon news today on Fox that the Dems are preparing open warfare against a SCOTUS decision to back the Arizona law. Per Fox, Dems allied with open border La Raza types will use endless lawfare and intimidation to overturn this law if it is upheld by SCOTUS. =================================================== The Supreme Court hears arguments Wednesday over Arizona’s immigration-crackdown law, but Democrats are already preparing for a potential loss by saying they’ll try to pass legislation stripping states of the power to enact their own immigration...

The rule of law that safeguards all Americans is what our brave men and women have fought and even died on the field of battle for, and in one swift switchblade move, President Obama has decided that he will decide nearly a million illegal criminals will not have to abide by federal and state laws. Obama also practiced this same despotic action when he decided in February 2011to not enforce the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) which congress passed in 1996, that barred the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage. But the despotic Obamarule did not stop there, because there...

The slippery slope leading down from rule of law to tyranny has been getting a lot of lubrication lately. The President of the United States bypassing the Constitution to announce he will not enforce immigration law for a category of offenders has sent a signal that is affecting others who ought to be part of the bulwark against tyranny. Bookworm, a California lawyer herself, has noticed that something very alarming just happened in the Golden State. It turns out that, in Obama's America, the federal executive branch is not the only government agency that has no use for explicit laws....

IXMIQUILPAN, Mexico (Reuters) - Seamstress Paulina Gutierrez, an ethnic Otomi Indian, prayed every day for years for a miracle to reunite her with her two sons, who were smuggled into the United States as children and have lived in permanent fear of deportation back to Mexico. Now, thanks to a major immigration policy shift by U.S. President Barack Obama, she can barely contain her excitement at the prospect of once again hugging her two boys - and two grandchildren she has never met. Without papers to get back into the United States, Gutierrez' sons cannot visit her in Mexico. She...

Undocumented Mexican youths who came to the United States as children reacted with joy to an Obama administration rule change that could spare them deportation. "It hasn't really sunk in entirely, but I feel a sense of joy and happiness because I know this is really going to change my life," said Justino Mora, 22, an undocumented computer science student at UCLA in Los Angeles. Mora is among an estimated 800,000 illegal immigrants up to 30 years old who came to the US as children and will benefit by the surprise order announced by US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano....

A special category of tuition created this month for illegal immigrants at a public university in Colorado violates both federal and state law, Judicial Watch points out in a letter to the school’s Board of Trustees. Therefore JW is calling for the immediate rescinding of the measure, which enables certain unlawfully present aliens to attend the taxpayer-funded school, Metropolitan State College of Denver, without having to pay full non-resident tuition. “In approving this new category of tuition, the College recognized that these students would otherwise be required to pay full non-resident tuition because of their inability to demonstrate lawful presence...
