The M4 Project began in early January, as an attempt to break three original Enigma messages that were intercepted in 1942 and are thought never to have been broken by the Allied forces. These messages were encrypted using a four-rotor Enigma. That version was considered by Germany to be completely unbreakable, as it could be set up in any one of a vast number of ways (2 times 10 to the 145th power), each of which would encrypt a plain text message differently.

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (Oct. 6, 2005) -- The CH-46 D/E Sea Knight helicopter is one of the Marine Corps’ most valuable assets, providing expedient transportation of critical cargo loads as well as providing troop transportation. Because of the valuables these high-powered machines carry, as well as their importance in military efforts such as the Global War on Terrorism, inspections must be conducted continuously to ensure the safety of the passengers and crew. The Marines who conduct these inspections are called non-destructive inspections technicians. Their job is to perform non-destructive testing of various metals in aircraft structures and...

By Bjorn Carey LiveScience Staff Writer posted: 27 September 2005 12:01 am ET Astronomers have found the first evidence of cracks in a neutron star's crust. The star cracked when it was rocked by the strongest "starquake" ever recorded, researchers said last week. Last December, astronomers worldwide monitored the explosion that caused this starquake. The eruption was huge – in the first 200 milliseconds of the event the star released energy equivalent to what our Sun produces in 250,000 years. It was the brightest explosion ever detected outside of the Milky Way. Now scientists have used a collection of data...

The Roseland police chief recently knocked on Trish Lane's door and told her that her front-yard parking pad was illegal. "It was the weirdest thing,'' Lane said. K.C. Pocius, the Roseland zoning czar, said the visit to Lane's home is part of an ongoing effort to clean up the town. Town Council Member David Snyder echoed Pocius' comment. He said too many Roseland homeowners have let their properties deteriorate, and something needs to be done to tidy up the town. The problem with Lane's supposed violation is that the town doesn't have an ordinance that prohibits parking in the front...

SEATTLE -- KIRO Team 7 Investigators discover cracks, corrosion and weakened metal hidden inside a growing number of Boeing passenger jets. The problems lie along structural seams called lap joints. A fuselage is designed with overlapping sheets of metal riveted together. We uncovered at least 28 different warnings regarding flaws or defects. In 2002, a China Airlines jet plummeted into the water, killing 225 passengers. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The solar wind pries open immense cracks in the Earth's magnetic field, holding them apart while it gushes through to cause geomagnetic storms, scientists reported on Wednesday. The findings could help scientists better predict the storms, which can disrupt power, satellites and communications and endanger astronauts, the U.S. space agency NASA (news - web sites) said. "We think we have solved an old and long-standing controversial discussion of how this process of crack formation really works," Harald Frey of the University of California, Berkeley, who led the study, told a news conference. "Now that we know these...

<p>SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Gov. Gray Davis sought today to downplay Democratic defections from a party strategy of unifying against the recall, insisting, ``Virtually everybody in the Democratic Party has solidly stood behind me.''</p> <p>Meanwhile, attention focused on actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, as advisers said the actor is leaning against running and an announcement could be imminent. That would open the door for former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, who said he will seriously consider running if Schwarzenegger does not.</p>

Morocco cracks down on Islamists By Isambard Wilkinson (Filed: 22/07/2003) A mass trial of hundreds of Moroccans suspected of having links with Islamic terrorism opened in Casablanca yesterday amid fears that the crackdown signals a return to the country's oppressive past. In the gloom of Casablanca's criminal court six rows of wispily bearded young men sitting behind a bullet-proof glass cage murmuring Koranic verses represented the first batch of 700 Islamists to be tried. As some of the suspects whispered encouragement to one another and laughed defiantly, other gaunt-looking young men shook uncontrollably as they wept. The 52 first suspects...

ISLAMABAD - Three weeks after its breathtaking gains in Oct 10 polls, cracks have emerged in Pakistan's Islamic party alliance, with the two main parties bickering over key government posts. The six-party Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) landed the balance of power in the national assembly, sparking concerns among liberals they would use their new influence to enforce Islamic law and throw US troops and intelligence agents out of the country. But veteran observers have said the fragility of the alliance, which unites traditional rivals, could see it break up before becoming a powerful political force. 'This MMA alliance is like a...

Space Shuttle Fleet Grounded Until September NASA's space shuttle fleet is likely to remain grounded until at least early September while technicians investigate tiny cracks discovered on pipes in the main engines of all four orbiters, according to shuttle program manager Ron Dittemore. The cause of the cracks remains unknown, but NASA officials believe all have a common root because the cracks appeared regardless of each launcher's age or the number of times it has flown, Dittemore said during a July 12 press conference at Johnson Space Center in Houston. Investigators first discovered the cracks on the space shuttle...
