Maloney, who is simultaneously running for reelection in the 18th district and for attorney general in New York, has been credited with starting the "Tampon Lobby" on Capitol Hill and has recently taken up the banner for "menstrual equity." . . . Maloney has suggested women working in the House cannot have "respect and dignity" unless taxpayers pay for their tampons.

Just a few months ago Democrats envisioned a “Blue Wave,” gaining 40-50 seats. Today their expectation have been tempered – and for good reason. Since 1946, Democrats have gained an average of 21 seats in the midterms when the president is a Republican. That gain would not be enough for a majority, where the Democrats need to gain 25 seats. Using election data since 1946, on average the president’s party (Republican or Democratic) loses 21 seats in the first midterm election. But that average masks big swings, from a 63-seat loss in 2010 to an 8-seat gain in 2002. The...

In 2004, the Supreme Court ruled, in the Kelo v. City of New London decision, that eminent domain could be used to seize private property from one owner and give it to another in the name of "economic development." It remains one of the most controversial decisions the court has made this century. Yesterday, Congress belatedly addressed the troubling issues raised by the decision by passing the Private Property Rights Protection Act. As Ed Morrissey at Hot Air points out, no major media outlets covered this seminal issue regarding the rights of citizens to be secure in their property. Amazingly, not one major media outlet picked...

President Trump sharply criticized the Federal Reserve this week, saying interest rate increases are hurting the economy. Trump will have the opportunity to fashion the central bank in the image he would like as he has four vacancies to fill on the board of governors. The result could be a more politicized Fed. President Donald Trump has multiple reasons as to why he should take control of the Federal Reserve. He will do so both because he can and because his broader policies argue that he should do so. The president is anti-overregulating American industry. The Fed is a leader...

Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Democratic nominee for New York State’s 14th congressional district November election Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Congress being “80 percent male” created “blind spots in our legislation.” Partial transcript as follows: MARGARET BRENNAN: Last week on this program we had the man you defeated, the New York Congressman Joe Crowley and he congratulated you on your win. He said you very much deserved it. He also explained two factors he thought that were- were decisive here. One of them being the year of the woman, he called it, and also the timing of the primary. Are...

NEW YORK (AP) - Members of the Congressional Black Caucus have joined New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in calling on the U.S. Senate to reject Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh because of his expansive interpretation of gun rights and the Second Amendment. Cuomo, a Democrat, said Saturday that Kavanaugh's past opinions show that he believes it is a constitutional right to carry "even the most dangerous assault weapons." Rep. Gregory Meeks, a New York Democrat, called Kavanaugh's nomination "a grave threat to reasonable gun control measures enacted by states." Meeks and other lawmakers joined Cuomo at a Manhattan news conference...

The journalistic hounds at CNN have a new target, a politician whose sin is so egregious – so unthinkable – that it can hardly be spoken aloud: the recently elected congressman from Minnesota disagrees with CNN orthodoxy on race. And now, with enthusiasm we have not seen since hordes of reporters descended on Rick Perry's boyhood hunting grounds where they found a 30-year-old racial expletive written under a rock, CNN has set out to punish Congressman Jason Lewis. The sins of the congressman were easy to ferret out. They came during a stint as a talk show host in Minneapolis...

The Trump administration this week cheered a new House bill to spend $5 billion on a Southern border wall, but its passage is highly unlikely because Senate Republicans are already prepared to cut that number by more than two-thirds. The fiscal year 2019 House Homeland Security Appropriations spending bill would give a major boost to border wall funding. Beyond the billions of dollars in funding for 200 miles of "new physical barrier construction" along the U.S.-Mexico border, it would also provide funding for improvements aimed at achieving “100 percent scanning” of the border within five years. The measure will soon...

It's a busy life for a congressman who is up for re-election in November, but it wasn't too busy for U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Watersmeet, to jump on a plane and head to South Korea earlier the month. Bergman, a retired U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant general, is the highest-ranking combat veteran ever elected to Congress. He said because of that, he is often consulted on matters of the military. "It's a chance for me to be a resource, a mentor for folks who want to make a good vote and have questions about the military," he said. His expertise meant...

Want to know how to live like a Washington insider? You could do worse than peruse the latest report on improper spending in Congress. One takeaway: From dining to hotels to shopping, D.C. politicians do not opt for adventure, at least when someone else is paying the tab. That’s according to a report released Thursday by the watchdog groups Issue One and The Campaign Legal Center. The report analyzed more than 200,000 Federal Election Commission records to determine how Congress Members and candidates use money raised through leadership political action committees.

Rep. Maxine Waters warned supporters on Wednesday of potential "armed protests" against her after an extremist group called for ongoing demonstrations outside her office in Los Angeles. In a lengthy statement issued late Wednesday, Waters, D-Calif., said she’d been notified about forthcoming protests by the Oath Keepers, which she described as "an anti-government militia" that's staged armed protests in cities across the country. She warned her supporters against being "baited" into counter-demonstrations or confrontations with the organization, which she said has a track record of "violent and provocative behavior." "I am requesting those individuals and groups planning a counter-protest to...

Democrat giant-slayer and soon-to-be Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez came close to saying she supports abolishing the free enterprise system and the precious economic freedoms on which it is based that have made America wealthy beyond its founders’ wildest dreams. The so-called democratic socialist Ocasio-Cortez whom DNC Chairman Tom Perez hails as “the future of our party,” breezily dismissed the current strength of the U.S. economy, claiming unemployment is low only because Americans are working two jobs. Capitalism is a fleeting phenomenon, she told PBS in an astounding display of historical ignorance that would no doubt endear her to anti-American conspiracy...

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Twitter complaints didn’t do any good. Even though she scored an upset victory over Rep. Joe Crowley in the New York Democratic Party’s June primary, his name is still going to be on the 14th Congressional District’s November ballot. Ocasio-Cortez demanded Crowley answer her phone calls so she could hear his congratulations and concession, and move on to win the November general election in NY-14. But she won the primary, right? Maybe she’s just being paranoid? Maybe not. Joe Lieberman wants NY-14 Democrats to “Vote Joe Crowley, for Working Families.” In a scathing op-ed published by the Wall...

A Pew Research Group study examining Facebook trends found that users of the social media platform were more likely to react using the "anger" emoji to political posts following the 2016 presidential election, a shift from more positive reactions months before. The study released Wednesday found that in the months leading up to the election, from Feb. 24, 2016, to Election Day, users of the platform were more likely to respond to political posts from members of Congress with the "love" emoji, using it a total of 7.3 million times. The "anger" emoji, by comparison, was used 3.6 million times...

At first, it was mostly just Chuck Schumer calling for hearings over what happened at the Trump – Putin summit. As Allahpundit noted last night, unless there are a lot of Republicans willing to go along with the idea (including key committee leaders) that’s not likely to happen. But now some additional Democrats are jumping on the dogpile and getting more specific than simply calling for “hearings.†Joe Kennedy and Jeanne Shaheen want to know what was discussed during the private, two-hour conversation between Presidents Trump and Putin. But if neither of the leaders are choosing to divulge that...

Democratic Rep. Joe Kennedy III called on the White House Wednesday to publicly recount what occurred in the private meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. If the White House does not come forward, Congress should bring the president's translator to testify, under subpoena if necessary, the Massachusetts congressman suggested during an interview on CNN’s "New Day." Mr. Kennedy acknowledged that the proposal is complicated by potential legal issues around privilege, but he said "it shouldn’t get that far."

The chances that President Trump will be impeached are rising, according to one Irish bookmaker, one day after Trump refused to denounce Russian meddling in the 2016 election following a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Paddy Power increased the likelihood of Trump being impeached on Tuesday from 8-1 to 2-1, according to Yahoo News. The news outlet first reported that the betting company also increased the likelihood of Trump being impeached this year, from 12-1 to 8-1....

Antonio Delgado railed against capitalism, rapped about porn, masturbating The Democratic congressional candidate for New York's 19th district, Antonio Delgado, rhymed about watching porn, masturbating, and attacked capitalism in his past life as a "social justice" rapper. Delgado, who is challenging Rep. John Faso (R., N.Y.), released an album under the record label "CD Baby" in 2007. Delgado, whom the New York Times considers "much less progressive" than other Democratic House candidates like socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, once tried to pursue a rap career to advance "radical social change" in the United States.

Is it a blue wave? Or maybe a red wave? It’s too soon to tell, but one thing you may be sure of is that people on both sides of the aisle are fired up and ready to charge out to the polls this November in a showdown over President Trump’s policies and the very future of the soul of America. Or are they?If you spend a lot of your time following people like the writers here at Hot Air on social media, you’d certainly think so. Spending too many hours of your day watching cable news and browsing...
