During a visit to the Iowa State Fair on Saturday, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump -- while repeatedly describing her as “nice woman” -- took aim at his GOP rival, former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, attacking her record in the private sector and her failed California Senate bid. “She's a very nice woman, she got fired, she did a terrible job at Hewlett-Packard, she lost in a landslide -- other than that, she's a very nice woman,” Trump, echoing recent comments, told ABC News Martha Raddatz when asked for his thoughts on his solo female GOP competitor for the nomination.

She’s running for President on her track record as CEO of HP, but if that’s the case, Fiorina might want to rethink her strategy. -snip- Still, with a scant 5% of Fortune 500 firms employing women CEOs, her leadership of a huge global enterprise in the macho field of IT is impressive. But how did she do? The answer in short is: Pretty badly. In 1999, a dysfunctional HP board committee, filled with its own poisoned politics, hired her with no CEO experience, nor interviews with the full board. Fired in 2005, after six years in office, several leading publications...

Amid a global slump in personal computer sales, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) has relinquished its position as the world's biggest PC seller for the first time in five years, one research firm reported Wednesday, while another had the Palo Alto technology giant clinging to the top spot. The bad news for HP was compounded by an additional report Wednesday that PC shipments from computer makers for the year would likely shrink about 1 percent, with the last such drop recorded during the dot-com bust of 2001. "HP has given up the PC vendor position for the first time since the third quarter...

Remember Compaq? Hewlett-Packard acquired the venerable computer company way back in 2002, but it's kept the name alive as a secondary brand ever since, mainly relegating Compaq to overseas markets (Compaq is particularly popular in Asia) and as second-tier PCs sold on the cheap at warehouse-style stores. But now HP is looking to breathe a little new life into the Compaq brand, positioning it not just as a label for extremely cheap computer equipment but also as one with mainstream appeal in the U.S. Today the company is announcing the rollout of a line of ultra-inexpensive PCs, both laptops and...

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina may or may not be on Arizona Sen. John McCain's short list for vice president, but she already is taking a crucial role in the Republican presidential hopeful's campaign. In March, Fiorina was picked by the Republican National Committee to chair a group directed to raise money and get out the vote for this year's elections. Shortly after that move was announced, Fiorina was interviewed by Business Week about her role. "My role is to be the primary advocate for John McCain and for the Republican Party," she said. "Certainly there are a lot of...

I just purchased a new laptop for the 17 yearold as she enters her senior year in highschool. Its a very cool Compaq model. The box that it came in has a big sticker on the side that says "Do Not Sell Until Janruary 30th 2007". Vista. Its running the new Vista system. So far it runs good. No problems have arised. My question is with the wireless router that I bought and connected to my desktop. So far the router works great and the internet is working fine. From what I gather, I can also use the router to...

"The similarities are almost eerie. This year, readers gave us the lowdown on over 13,000 desktop PCs—enough data to rate eight of the country's leading brands. And the final tally looks an awful lot like last year's survey results," Cade Metz reports for PC Magazine on "The 19th Annual Reader Satisfaction Survey." Metz reports, "This year, you diehard PC Mag readers detailed your experiences with nearly 20,000 PCs (notebooks and desktops) and more than 6,500 printers (from mono lasers to color ink jet all-in-ones). And what you say about the leading manufacturers isn't always what we'd expect. No big...

BERKELEY, Calif. (MarketWatch) -- The fact is that Hewlett-Packard before Carly Fiorina (nee Cara Carleton S. Sneed) was probably less dynamic than it is today. She managed to bring some marketing savvy to the company and managed to shake up that stodgy corporate culture known as "the H-P way." That said, H-P slowly evolved from an engineering-centric company to one that makes many of its products offshore and has become a commodity provider too ensnared in the world of humdrum PC's when companies like IBM have bailed out of the business as Dell continues to effortlessly dominate. While there will...

Ok all, I've got a computer problem on a new to me Laptop, a Compaq Armada M700, PII 366. It was working fine yesterday when I attempted to install Windows XP, unfortunately I only got 1/2 through it before the CD drive found a terminal scratch on my CD. The computer kept trying to go back to the CD install but could not get past the scratched CD. I opened the CD drive, removed the CD and attempted to shut the PC down. It kept asking for the XP disk and would not power down with the on/off button. I...

The dramatic collapse in the value of internet companies was highlighted once more by Overture's $140m acquisition of Alta Vista, one of the pioneers of web search and once one of the world's most coveted online companies. Alta Vista's struggling parent CMGI, the Massachusetts-based technology group, has sold one of its crown jewels for just a fraction of the $2.3bn it paid to Compaq in 1999, when it took an 83 per cent stake in Alta Vista. Overture, which calls itself "the world's leader in Pay-For-Performance search", allows advertisers to bid for well-placed spots among web search results on sites...

Big international corporations, including Microsoft, UBS and Compaq, were among the donors to an Islamic charity that US officials say was one of the leading financiers for Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda organisation. In evidence filed in its case against Enaam Arnaout, who headed the Chicago-based charity Benevolence International, the US Justice Department says the charity received both direct employee donations and matching grants from those companies. Microsoft told the Associated Press that it contributed about $20,000 to BIF over "a period of time", but ended the matching grants after it learned of the terrorism allegations. Both UBS and Hewlett-Packard,...

Reuters Technology Hewlett Says H-P Lied on Merger, Tainted Vote By Caroline Humer WILMINGTON, Del. (Reuters) - Deutsche Bank AG's 11th-hour decision to back Hewlett-Packard Co.'s (NYSE:HWP - news) takeover of Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news) stemmed from its concerns for its investment banking relationship with H-P, lawyers contesting the merger charged on Tuesday. Top executives of the computer and printer maker, including Chairman and Chief Executive Carly Fiorina, faced off in a wood-paneled Delaware courtroom against Walter Hewlett, a dissident board member and son of the company's co-founder, who has fought the merger in a proxy battle. Associated Press Fiorina: Shareholders Not Deceived By BRIAN BERGSTEIN AP Business Writer Hewlett-Packard's Carly Fiorina Says She Didn't Deceive Shareholders About Compaq Merger WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) -- Fighting to save the biggest merger in high-tech history, Hewlett-Packard Co. chief Carly Fiorina testified Tuesday that she didn't deceive shareholders about the prospects of the Compaq Computer Corp. Hewlett-Packard Co. shareholders appear to have narrowly approved the company's bitterly contested $20 billion acquisition of Compaq Computer Corp., an independent proxy certifying firm said Wednesday, though the result still is not final. After spending more than three weeks going over the proxies, IVS Associates of Newark, Del., told HP its preliminary count showed that 837.9 million shares, or 51.4 percent of those cast, were voted in favor of the Compaq deal, with 792.6 million, or 48.6 percent, against it. That supports HP chief Carly Fiorina's claim immediately after the March 19 vote that shareholders had approved the deal by...
