Hong Kong’s retired bishop Joseph Zen Ze-kiun said on Monday that allowing the Chinese government to appoint Catholic bishops in the pope’s stead would mean “surrender.” The statement came after the city’s current bishop, John Tong Hon, said last Friday that the Chinese government and Vatican are in dialogue to discuss the contentious issue of appointing bishops in China. The official Catholic church of China is currently run by the government-controlled Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, which appoints its own bishops, whereas the Vatican insists on its right to appoint bishops in the region, prompting the creation of underground churches which...

The article by Card. John Tong, published today, mentions the difficulties and embarrassment experienced by unofficial faithful in China at the way in which China-Holy See talks are being conducted; at the Vatican's silence on the persecution suffered by the faithful; at the ambiguity of the Patriotic Association, the organism that controls the Church in China. Card. Joseph Zen, bishop emeritus of Hong Kong, speaks out on behalf of the underground communities. In order to deepen our understanding of the issues being debated by Catholics in China and the shadows that Card. Tong tries to dispel regarding China-Holy See dialogue,...

Donald Trump has come under fire for his praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his ties to the country--and he suggested Sunday that he might recognize Russia's control of Crimea. "You know, the people of Crimea, from what I've heard, would rather be with Russia than where they were," he said on ABC's "This Week." "And you have to look at that, also. Now, that was under -- just so you understand, that was done under Obama's administration. ... Crimea has been taken. Don't blame Donald Trump for that." Trump made those comments just after saying Putin is "not...

MANILA — Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte called off a week-long ceasefire after communist guerrillas killed a government militiaman and failed to declare their own truce by a Saturday deadline he had imposed. It was the first irritant in what has been a blossoming relationship between Duterte, who calls himself a left-wing president, and the Maoist guerrillas, who have been waging one of Asia’s longest-running communist insurgencies. Both sides had agreed to resume peace talks next month in Norway, and it was not immediately clear whether the talks would be affected. After withdrawing his ceasefire order, Duterte issued a statement on...

Excerpt: (CNN)Newly-elected Philippines president Rodrigo Roa Duterte, in his first state of the nation address (SONA), announced an immediate unilateral ceasefire with communist rebels who have been battling government forces since 1968. Duterte's announcement comes as the Philippines government prepares to resume official peace talks with the Communist Party of the Philippines, National Democratic Party and the armed New People's Army in August, a move which may signal an end to Asia's longest running communist insurgency. "To the CPP/NPA/NDF, let us end these decades of ambuscades and skirmishes. We are going nowhere. And it is getting bloodier by the day,"...

Activists marched illegally down streets, fought with one another and defied a downtown tennis ball ban Tuesday during the second day of the Republican National Convention. But as the excitement unfolded, some activist leaders wondered where the crowds were. Cleveland has seen far smaller protests than those at other recent conventions, despite the nomination of Donald Trump eliciting a rage from progressives that rivals or exceeds their hatred of former President George W. Bush. In a further distinction, it has also seen very few activism-related arrests. “Look, I’ll say this: It’s not a good thing people aren’t here in a...

Infowars founder and radio host Alex Jones was in Cleveland Tuesday afternoon for the Republican National Convention. He was there to promote free speech and speak out against the protesters, who Jones called “globalists fomenting civil war in America” while “pushing communism and a race war." Jones went right into the middle of the crowd and responded to their protest. His comments over megaphone included, "The communists are a bunch of murdering scum worldwide, and George Soros is a Nazi-collaborator funding these organizations" and "We are here to promote a free, open election in this country and an open, free...

The United Nations has invited a Black Lives Matter activist to participate in a high-level debate in New York on human rights, with a particular focus on “combatting discrimination and inequalities.” The two-day U.N. event Tuesday and Wednesday comes amid tensions over last week’s police shootings of two black men in Minnesota and Louisiana, and the killing by a gunman of five police officers during a Black Lives Matter protest march in Dallas. Hosted by U.N. General Assembly president Mogens Lykketoft, the event entitled “Human Rights at the center of the global agenda” involves keynote speeches, a plenary debate among...

Given FBI Director Comey's failure to recommend indictment because of Hillary's continually putting the U.S. in mortal danger and her using a premeditating syndicate for the purpose of sharing sensitive information with key enemies around the world, Comey's name should now be pronounced "Commie"'?

The titles of “hero” or warrior” are probably two of the most appropriated titles today by those who are the least deserving of that distinction. They do not walk a warrior’s humble path of honor and self-sacrifice but, instead, seek fame pursuing a selfish agenda through intimidation and threats of violence. This is no truer than those screaming children at our universities along with their liberal professors screaming for muscle or those threatening riots if a particular candidate is elected President of the United States.

Fight Back News Service is circulating the following July 1 statement from Students for a Democratic Society. In late April 2016, the remaining candidates for the 2016 Republican nominee, Ted Cruz and John Kasich, dropped out of the presidential race. This leaves Donald Trump as the presumptive nominee, without any opposing Republican candidate with support from Congress. Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) chapters, along with numerous progressive, anti-war, anti-racist organizations in the Coalition to Stop Trump and March on the RNC, are thus preparing to March on the RNC in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 18th, and to call on...

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Black Lives Matter Bay Area organizers Friday said they were withdrawing as Grand Marshals for the weekend San Francisco Pride Parade in response to an increased police presence and security measures announced in the wake of a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando. Black Lives Matter was chosen as an organizational grand marshal for the parade in honor of its theme, “For Racial and Economic Justice.”

Democratic lawmakers shut down the U.S. House Wednesday by staging a sit-in on the House floor to demand a vote on gun control legislation. Roughly 40 House lawmakers sat on the floor and refused to allow Republicans to take back control. They took turns talking about gun violence, said they wouldn't leave until House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., allowed a vote on measures to curb it, and chanted over and over "No bill, no break!" The House is scheduled to adjourn on Friday and be out of session until July 5.

The media’s wall-to-wall coverage of Donald Trump and the presidential horserace is a distraction from the main event. The point of the horserace—and of all politics—is to run a government capable of dealing effectively with the nation’s problems. But effective government is precisely what we don’t have. America’s greatest challenge is that it is burdened by a government that doesn’t work, and indeed is dysfunctional. Why is the nation so poorly governed? This is the question that we address in our new book, Relic. What we show is that the fundamentals of an answer can be traced to the Constitution—which,...

President-elect Rodrigo Duterte will not move a finger in getting Chief Inspector Arnold Ongache who was abducted by the New People’s Army on 29 May 2016. Ongache was held as a prisoner of war by the NPA rebels because he was protecting a drug sydicate in Davao Oriental. Ognache reportedly had a sachet of shabu inside his pocket when he captured at the Governor Generoso Municipal Police Station. In a late night press conference on 2 June 2016, Duterte said that he talked to an NPA leader, whom he identified as “Quinn”, and he confirmed that Ongache was deep in...

The Philadelphia School District will add two Muslim holidays to its calendar and the city will create a task force to study doing the same for the city’s calendar, officials announced Tuesday. “Philadelphia’s history is based on being a place where religious freedom is part of its founding ethos,” Mayor Kenney said at a news conference in City Hall. “Our city was built on the idea that while we may be different in nationality and ethnicity, the city welcomes all to worship and practice the faiths of our culture or our choosing.” The two holidays are Eid al-Fitr, celebrated after...

I have recently heard reports on the news and read articles in newspapers and magazines concerning the current situation in Venezuela. To hear the reporters talk, the only problem is the death of Chavez. Seemingly, were the right dictator found all would be well. The most interesting thing, in all the mainstream media, I have yet to hear mention of what type of government is starving its people in Venezuela. None dare call it communism.
