As inflation continues to soar, gas prices skyrocket, and the southern border crisis goes unaddressed, President Joe Biden (D) spent time this week rubbing elbows with Hollywood stars as the cast of the Oscar-nominated movie CODA visited the White House. In a video posted to First Lady Jill Biden’s social media accounts, the cast — including Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, Emilia Jones, and Daniel Durant — toured the White House and looked on as the U.S. Marine Band performed music from the movie.

The word on the street is that the Obama administration is ready to reignite the Department of Energy loan program for alternative vehicles. I think I’ve harped on Fisker Automotive, Vehicle Production Group and the battery-failure twins Solyndra and A123 Systems enough for you all to remember that each one of these flops received large loans from DOE… and failed to pay them back. The controversial loan program was taken offline by then department head Steven Chu two years ago. Well, it’s back. Chu’s successor, Ernest Moniz, is hoping that the department can jump-start the loan program again — and...

California-based electric car maker, Coda, filed for bankruptcy protection on Wednesday, saying it plans to transition to the battery and energy-storage business. The company had positioned itself as a cheaper alternative to fellow electric-car maker Tesla (TSLA) and plug-in hybrid-car maker Fisker. Coda's all-electric mid-sized sedan went for roughly $37,000, but proved a huge sales disappointment, with less than 100 vehicles sold. A Tesla Model S, with its most potent battery option, goes for $72,000. Coda had the bodies and chassis of its cars built in China, with the battery systems installed in California. CEO Phil Murtaugh said in a...

The first Chinese car that you buy may actually be American. California startup automaker Coda Automotive began production of its all-electric sedan on Monday at a facility in Benicia, outside of San Francisco. The battery-powered four-door is assembled from a glider” -- basically a complete car without a drivetrain -- that’s built by Coda in China under license from local automaker ChangAn Hafei. Its 31 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack comes from Tianjin, China-based Lishen Power Battery and powers an electric motor manufactured in Colorado by UQM Technologies.

Coda Automotive, the California-based maker of an all-electric sedan primarily produced in China, last Friday laid off more than 50 employees, including a substantial part of its sales and marketing staff, according to a source familiar with the company’s business. The source, who contacted PluginCars.com about the news, wants to stay anonymous based on concerns about possible “blow back” from Coda executives. The anonymous source said the company had sold fewer than 100 units of its all-electric sedan since it went on sale in March 2012—and that sales had virtually stopped after the car was recalled by the National Highway...

John Bryson sits on the board of troubled electric car manufacturer Coda, which is waist-deep in Chinese investment and debt.    John Bryson, President Barack Obama’s nominee for commerce secretary, may be best known as co-founder of the radical activist group Natural Resources Defense Council and as CEO of Edison International, parent company of giant electric utility Southern California Edison. But one of his biggest obstacles to Senate confirmation may be his relationship with troubled Chinese-backed electric car company Coda Automotive.Bryson has been a vocal advocate for Coda since 2008. He sits on the firm’s board of directors and is...
