The last biker still behind bars over the deadly clash at the the Twin Peaks in Waco is expected to be released from jail Wednesday, his lawyer said. Marcus Pilkington and 176 others arrested had been held on $1 million bail a piece following the May melee that left nine people dead and 18 wounded. Everyone else had been able to either meet the bail amount of have their bail greatly reduced. The McLennan County District Attorney’s Office agreed to his bail being dropped to $50,000, which means Pilkington has to post 10 percent of that to be conditionally freed...

A grand jury convened in Waco yesterday morning. .) It will remain in session through the rest of 2015. It has already requested documents from the Texas Confederation of Clubs and Independents so, even though this is all top secret, there is an excellent chance this grand jury will decide which of the 177 people arrested after the Twin Peaks Massacre last May 17 will have to stand trial for “engaging in organized criminal activity.” .) The fact that so many apparently innocent people now find their fates in the hands of this grand jury raises a familiar question: Why...
  • EDITORIAL: Are state taxpayers responsible for how we handled Twin Peaks shootout?

That said, Wacoans who pretend to be concerned about government expense should reflect deeply on their conservative principles, assuming they actually have them. Should state taxpayers legitimately help bear the cost, say, of jailing 177 bikers for weeks on million-dollar bonds when something very obviously failed somewhere in the local criminal justice system in terms of due process? How about the filing of one-size-fits-all charges against the 177? Nor should they, at least not at this point. District Attorney Abel Reyna, Waco police and others have shown little public accountability for their actions, some of which have garnered mounting criticism...

HOUSTON – A federal agent is under investigation after he allegedly assaulted a man at a high school football game, then pulled his gun on a crowd that gathered during the melee. Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms special agent Marc Delpit, father of a St. Thomas High School football player, allegedly got into an argument with a fellow team father during half-time in a recent game against Angleton High School. Several witnesses allege Delpit punched the man to the ground and continued to assault him as bystanders gathered and attempted to intervene, KHOU reports. The special agent told police...
  • Clarity remains elusive four months after Waco biker shootout

More than four months after nine bikers were killed May 17 during a shootout outside the Twin Peaks restaurant in Waco, troubling questions stand before us, while clarity remains elusive. The mass arrest of 177 people has created a legal morass, and complicated an already complex investigation. An overly broad gag order is feeding suspicion that more than complexity is delaying the release of information about the investigation. And while autopsy reports on the nine bikers killed were released in August, ballistics testing reportedly continues. Without ballistics evidence the question of who shot whom increasingly generates harmful speculation. The embarrassing...
  • Our police union problem

For decades now, conservatives have pressed the case that public sector unions do not serve the common good. The argument is philosophical and practical at once. First, the state monopoly on certain vital services makes even work slowdowns unacceptable and the ability to fire poor-performing personnel essential, and a unionized workforce creates problems on both fronts. Second, the government's money is not its own, so negotiations between politicians and their employees (who are also often their political supporters) amount to a division of spoils rather than a sharing of profits. Third, these negotiations inevitably drive up the cost of public...

The Texas police officer who shot dead an unarmed college football player during a suspected burglary at a car dealership has been fired. Brad Miller had his employment terminated by the town's chief of police, who criticized his 'poor judgment' when he killed Christian Taylor in Arlington, Texas, on Friday The white 49-year-old officer should not have approached the black 19-year-old alone, Arlington police chief Will Johnson told reporters at a news conference. Miller joined the police department in September and graduated from the city police academy earlier this year. Police said he cannot appeal his firing because he was...

Sheka was attending the Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas convention near the hotel. According to the El Paso arrest affidavit, Sheka was engaged in a conversation with a female server near the hotel bar. The conversation allegedly turned inappropriate when Sheka began making comments of a sexual nature and ultimately touched the female inappropriately as she walked past him. The server told Sheka not to do that and walked away, escorted by another male, when Sheka pulled out a pistol and fired one round into a nearby wall.
