"By the way, I just noticed, if you've got chairs, feel free to sit down," President Obama said to a student audience in New Britain, Connecticut on Wednesday. "I know the folks here don't have chairs," Obama said, pointing to the audience members in the front row. "And if you're standing up, make sure to bend your knees so you don't faint," Obama instructed.

Students at Central Connecticut State University flipped on their computers and waited anxiously for an email that would give them the chance to see President Obama speak at their school on Wednesday. “Every single computer was full,” said student Keanii Munoz, who stopped first at the science lab, then headed to the student union in search of a free machine. “Everybody’s been trying to register.” The link to reigster arrived around noon in a much-anticipated email. Students refreshed their inboxes until the message came, then hoped luck was on their side as they clicked through. “I finally got the email...

For CCSU student John Wahlberg, a class presentation on campus violence turned into a confrontation with the campus police due to a complaint by the professor. On October 3, 2008, Wahlberg and two other classmates prepared to give an oral presentation for a Communication 140 class that was required to discuss a “relevant issue in the media”. Wahlberg and his group chose to discuss school violence due to recent events such as the Virginia Tech shootings that occurred in 2007. Shortly after his professor, Paula Anderson, filed a complaint with the CCSU Police against her student. During the presentation Wahlberg...

When I recently had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Jay Bergman of Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), I couldn’t help but wonder, what’s a nice guy like this doing teaching in a school like that? When he complained in a letter to the local newspaper about the lack of intellectual diversity at CCSU, he cited as an example the day-long forum on slavery reparations in the United States held by the African Studies Program (ASP). Dr. Bergman pointed out that the same department was entirely mute on the subject of the enslavement of Africans by Africans taking place to this...

On Tuesday night at Central Connecticut State University, a capacity crowd filled Welte Auditorium to honor Noam Chomsky, touted as "one of the world's most distinguished scholars" and a "noted foreign policy critic." A standing ovation and resounding applause greeted Chomsky as CCSU President Richard Judd deemed his appearance a "special night" for venerating "one of the greatest intellectuals" of the last two centuries. Many of the faculty formed the pit orchestra for Chomsky's anti-American crooning and left the hall eager to return to the classroom and play Pin the Evil Talons on the American Eagle. I attended wondering why...
