Editorial: Protection for illegals Nov. 30, 2006. 01:00 AM An estimated 80,000 illegal immigrants live and work in Toronto and they do so without being able to access many of the basic services most Canadians take for granted, such as health care. But because of an innovative policy adopted in February by the Toronto Police Services Board, illegal immigrants who have been abused by their spouses, have been the victims of a crime or have witnessed a crime no longer need to fear calling the police because they might be deported. This groundbreaking "don't ask, don't tell" policy prevents Toronto...

A major federal department has temporarily banned the hiring of able-bodied white men in an unusual move critics say could spark a backlash against the very disadvantaged groups it is meant to help. Managers in the Public Works department must hire only visible minorities, women, aboriginals and the disabled, except with written permission from their superiors, David Marshall, the deputy minister, ordered in an e-mail circulated yesterday. The policy, designed to address shortfalls in the department's employment-equity goals, will last at least until the end of next March and be reviewed then, the memo said. "As executives and managers, our...

Many argue that communism will never be possible because of "human nature". The essence of this false argument is the belief that a communist society would consist of an all-powerful central government that would tell everybody what to do--and would therefore undermine the creative initiative of individuals and the search for happiness. • This argument is based on two false assumptions: (1) It assumes that a communist society will look like the former Soviet Union, or the current China, North Korea, etc (ie: corrupt police states with a feudal-style ruling class) (2) It assumes that people will only work in...

Under a new passport policy in Canada, ''Israel" cannot be specified as the country of birth for Canadian citizens born in Jerusalem. Canadian Jews are being told by their government to surrender their passports so the word "Israel" can be removed if it appears next to the name of the Jewish state's capital, according to a report by Israel National News. The campaign to recall the passports comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed by B'nai Brith of Canada on behalf of a 17-year-old Toronto resident. The teen objected to the ban on declaring Israel as his birth country...

What happens when habitual warmongering and BushCo lies become part of our daily diet? And then you read the appalling little story about how BushCo is now "taking steps" to further the investigation into why their original intelligence on Iraq was so painfully, treasonously, colon-clenchingly wrong, why they thought Saddam had giant Costco-sized warehouses stacked to the rafters with snarling nukes and nasty biotoxins and active warheads when, in fact, he had nothing but a couple Dumpsters full of rusty 20-year-old shell casings and a bucket of stale glue.

We kill millions of pets every year Who cares if a few get posh shelters and humane laws? OK. So I tend to think people who insist on calling themselves pet "guardians" instead of "owners" are exasperating and a bit wrongheaded, and that such uber-PC thinking does almost nothing to change or improve the behavior of the thousands of animal abusers in this country. And I tend to agree with fabulous dog writer Jon Katz that such semantic sidestepping does more harm to the animals than good, and leads to naive treatment, lack of decent training and an outright ignorance...

Heads roll at CBS over Bush report Network's probe blames staffers' 'myopic zeal' ANTONIA ZERBISIAS Four big heads — but not the fat talking one called Dan Rather — are rolling at CBS. The axings come after an independent study found "myopic zeal" was behind last September's questionable 60 Minutes Wednesday report on gaps in President George W. Bush's National Guard service records. Yesterday, CBS announced that Mary Mapes, who produced the story about Bush getting "special treatment," was fired. Senior broadcast producer Mary Murphy, executive producer Josh Howard and Betsy West, who supervised CBS News primetime programs, have all...

Talking to Americans not what it used to be MARTIN KNELMAN Hockey Night in Canada may have been snatched away from us, but this country's second favourite spectator sport is enjoying a resurgence. In the wake of the November election, when U.S. voters dared to re-elect a president widely loathed in Canada, bashing Americans has become an even more satisfying feel-good diversion than it used to be. And as the CBC discovered this week, it also happens to be just about the only reliable ratings booster that does not involve shooting pucks down the ice. Here is the astonishing bulletin....

Use of Sharia law by Muslims okay, report says CANADIAN PRESS Ontario Muslims should have the same rights as Roman Catholics and Jews in the province to seek arbitration based on religious law for family disputes and inheritance cases, a report by former attorney general Marion Boyd concludes. "The Arbitration Act should continue to allow disputes to be arbitrated using religious law," Boyd recommends in her report to the Ontario government. Boyd was appointed to study the issue after the Islamic Institute for Civil Justice requested the right to offer religious-based arbitrations for family disputes based on Sharia law. The...

Did you hear the screams? Did you feel the menacing chill? Did you see the black and ominous clouds, moving north? Did you sense, in other words, the very presence of Satan himself as he laughed maniacally and tossed around bucketfuls of ultrathin condoms and little travel-size packets of Astroglide like confetti while riding his Harley Softail up to Toronto or maybe Edmonton to join the ghastly and sodomitic celebrations? Because it's happened. Canada's high court just ruled that the government can, if it so desires, redefine marriage to include gay couples, which it has declared it will do almost...

MUSLIM parents who object to their kids taking same-sex issues classes may not have a choice under Ontario's human rights code. The Toronto District School Board refused to grant Muslim students exemption from classes teaching same-sex issues because the class is based in the Ontario Human Rights Code, said Patricia Hayes, a human rights officer with the board. "It's human rights education," Hayes said. "We can't exempt anyone from human rights education." She said the board is "legally bound" to protect the rights of kids with parents in a same-sex relationship. Education Minister Gerard Kennedy said public schools exist to...

This, too, shall pass. The United States will muddle through, as it's muddled through before, because the idea of America, and the system that sustains it, is bigger and braver and more enduring than any single subpar president or collective brain cramp of the populace. But it's so damn sad anyway. Once again, as Franklin Roosevelt put it, the only thing to fear was fear itself, only this time fear won. Bombast won, the Big Lie won. And of course George W. Bush won, with his staunch certainties in a scary world and his skilled retailing of "moral values" to...

More than one in four sexual assaults occur after a woman has been drugged by her assailant, according to new Canadian research. The study, published in the Canadian Journal of Public Health, shows that the incidence of so-called ''date-rape drugging'' has increased dramatically in the past decade. It also reveals that the vast majority of those who are drugged, then raped, are teenagers aged 15 to 19. The study, conducted by a team led by Margaret McGregor of the Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia, is believed to be the first to measure the extent of...

November 6, 2004 Canadian Muslim community dealing with fallout from leaders' remarks By STEVE MERTL VANCOUVER (CP) - Analysts linked to the intelligence community say they worry North America's Muslim community is being radicalized, but some Canadian Muslims reject suggestions their community is monolithic or intolerant. The concern over radicalization surfaced last month amid reaction to intolerant remarks from two Muslim leaders and reports that one of the men's followers turned up dead with Muslim rebels in Chechnya. The incidents triggered a predictable spasm of outrage and demands the "Muslim community" distance itself from those viewpoints. Critics say moderation within...

The Great White North hardly registers as a hotbed for Islamic political activity. Yet in the run-up to last June's Canadian federal elections, Islamic lobbies exerted unprecedented pressure on electoral candidates and actively pursued the emergence of a Muslim voting bloc. A key player among the seemingly endless list of Islamic groups and lobbies operating in Canada is the Canadian Islamic Congress (CIC). The CIC is a numerically small yet extremely prolific outfit presided by Egyptian-born Mohammed Elmasry. Two full months prior to the declaration of general elections, the CIC published a report named "Election 2004. Towards Informed and Committed...

Item: Muslims adopt Shariah legal code in Canada The legal code of the Koran will override Canadian Law. Muslims claim they are different and demand that their Religious Law take precedence over Canadian Jurisprudence. According to these retrograde humans, who have snuck in and who have been welcomed by extreme Liberalism, praying for the day that a braless society will become a lawless society; from burning their bras to burning the law books, Feminism has now been turned upside down by a male dominated religion so backwards that it is perfectly acceptable that a son receive twice the inheritance of...

A high school play featuring a same-sex kiss between two lesbian characters has caused a stir in North Vancouver. The principal of Handsworth Secondary told the school's drama teacher to take the scene out of the play Broken Theory – after getting some complaints after the play's second show. North Vancouver School Board chair Ginny Diebolt says the principal acted because the play featured inappropriate language and sexually explicit scenes. "High school plays must have a broad appeal to a broad range in the community. "And I think there is an expectation in our community that if you go to...

In George Bush's Houston, America wears its isolation as a badge of pride. Crying. The man in section 128, row AA, seat 27, was crying. Standing in Houston's Reliant Stadium, not that far above the 40-yard line, a visitor from Canada could be forgiven for wondering why the well-dressed American wasn't deliriously happy. After all, his Super Bowl XXXVIII ticket had a face value of $500 U.S., the big Texas sky had turned sunny for the first time in days, and an astonishing pre-game show had just concluded, offering up the likes of Aerosmith, Willie Nelson and Houston's very own...
