A Florida professor admitted Tuesday he had been a Cuban spy for nearly 30 years, and his wife -- also a professor -- admitted she knew of his conduct, authorities said. Both Carlos Alvarez and his wife Elsa pleaded guilty to lesser charges in federal court in Miami. The couple entered their pleas as part of a deal to avoid a jury trial on previous charges of being Cuban agents who failed to register with the U.S. government, the Miami Herald reported Tuesday. The more serious offense could have put the couple in prison for a decade, the paper said....
  • CANF REACTS TO MICHAEL MOORE’S COMMENTS

The Cuban American National Foundation completely rejects Mr. Moore’s bigoted comments against the Cuban-American community and this organization in particular. While Mr. Moore has a right to express his views, it is unfortunate and disingenuous to choose a group, which in many respects is the embodiment of the American Dream, as his target. As most useful idiots, Mr. Moore will go down in history as an apologist for the most brutal dictatorship in the history of the Americas. 45 years of totalitarianism is not an excusable response to the acts of prior governments of Cuba, just as McCarthyism’s targeting of...
  • Actual Text of Cuban Letter To President Bush (Not as "angry" as depicted by media!)

I've seen reports all over cable networks how angry the Cubans are with President Bush. Even some Cuban Americans are going on TV saying how they disagree with the President. One supposedly prominent Cuban leader left the GOP and registered as an independent. But I haven't seen any alternative given...in other words, this appears by and large to be an internal debate of supporters of the President. So, I decided to look at the text of the letter myself. What I saw was just that: a letter expressing concern, not unlike the several letters I sent the President regarding the wretched...

MIAMI - Jorge Mas Santos stands in an elegant Coral Gables living room espousing what, until very recently, was heresy here - moderation toward Cuba. "We do not need the 101st Airborne in Havana," Mr. Mas tells a group of the best and brightest young Cuban-Americans who've gathered for drinks and crudités. "We have to change the debate, talk about the violations of human rights, the need for elections, the enslaving of the Cuban people. That's what we need to show the world, that's a compelling argument that cannot be debated."With Cuban-American relations more strained than at any time since...

CANF Congratulates HBO on Pulling Castro Documentary MIAMI, April 15 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Jorge Mas Santos, the chairman of the Cuban American National Foundation, congratulated HBO Productions today on the removal of an Oliver Stone documentary on Fidel Castro from HBO's May schedule. The documentary, titled "Comandante," reportedly was a showcase for the world's longest reigning tyrant in his own words -- without context or dissenting views. "In recent weeks the world has been reminded once again of the cruelty and deceit of Fidel Castro and his henchmen," stated Mas. "The mass arrests of peaceful dissidents, the harsh prison sentences...

July 29— MIAMI (Reuters) - A Cuban former deputy foreign minister and one-time aide to Defense Minister Raul Castro has defected to the United States, saying he did not want to be another laborer on President Fidel Castro's "farm." Alcibiades Hidalgo, 56, was quoted by El Nuevo Herald as saying he had been sidelined from senior positions in Cuba for years and was working at the state-run newspaper Trabajadores when he left last week.Joe Garcia, a leader of the Cuban American National Foundation, an exile group, on Monday confirmed Hidalgo's defection.Garcia said that whatever Hidalgo's past, which might arouse negative...
