As you may already know, Dad has had alot of problems lately. He has early stage (T1) pancreatic Ductile adenocarcinoma (PDAC). He is having a Roux-en-y procedure tomorrow AM, followed by a "Whipple " procedure if the cancer doctors do not find any metastatic tissue. Any prayers for Jim Bryan (#4 all time Arkansas high school basketball scorer with 2,700+ points (before 3-points invented ) ) would be appreciated. Prayers also for St. Vincent's cancer surgeon team and Dr. Jones, too. Thanks!

UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State’s THON made a statement. Again. The 2015 Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, affectionately known as THON, was held this past weekend at the Bryce Jordan Center on the campus of Penn State University. After 46 hours of dancing, it was revealed that the organization raised $13,026,653.23 during the past year. THON is a year-long fundraising campaign for the fight against pediatric cancer. Money raised is donated to the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey. This marks the first time since 2004 that THON raised less money than the previous year. Last...
  • An ingredient in olive oil that appears to kill cancer cells

A Rutgers nutritional scientist and two cancer biologists at New York City’s Hunter College have found that an ingredient in extra-virgin olive oil kills a variety of human cancer cells without harming healthy cells. The ingredient is oleocanthal, a compound that ruptures a part of the cancerous cell, releasing enzymes that cause cell death. Paul Breslin, professor of nutritional sciences in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, and David Foster and Onica LeGendre of Hunter College, report that oleocanthal kills cancerous cells in the laboratory by rupturing vesicles that store the cell’s waste. The findings are published in Molecular...

Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson is being treated for cancer. A statement on the band’s website said he was diagnosed just before Christmas after a small cancerous tumor was found at the back of his tongue. He has just completed a seven-week course of chemotherapy and radiology treatment, and is expected to make a full recovery. “As the tumor was caught in the early stages, the prognosis, thankfully, is extremely good,” the statement said. …

In the American liberal compass, the needle is always pointing to places like Denmark. Everything they most fervently hope for here has already happened there. So: Why does no one seem particularly interested in visiting Denmark? (“Honey, on our European trip, I want to see Tuscany, Paris, Berlin and . . . Jutland!”) Visitors say Danes are joyless to be around. Denmark suffers from high rates of alcoholism. In its use of antidepressants it ranks fourth in the world. (Its fellow Nordics the Icelanders are in front by a wide margin.) Some 5% of Danish men have had sex with...

Abstract Here, we propose a new strategy for the treatment of early cancerous lesions and advanced metastatic disease, via the selective targeting of cancer stem cells (CSCs), a.k.a., tumor-initiating cells (TICs). We searched for a global phenotypic characteristic that was highly conserved among cancer stem cells, across multiple tumor types, to provide a mutation-independent approach to cancer therapy. This would allow us to target cancer stem cells, effectively treating cancer as a single disease of “stemness”, independently of the tumor tissue type. Using this approach, we identified a conserved phenotypic weak point – a strict dependence on mitochondrial biogenesis for...
  • Study details a link between inflammation and cancer

A new study from MIT reveals one reason why people who suffer from chronic inflammatory diseases such as colitis have a higher risk of mutations that cause cancer. The researchers also found that exposure to DNA-damaging chemicals after a bout of inflammation boosts these mutations even more, further increasing cancer risk. The findings confirm a longstanding theory about why inflammation and cancer are linked, and offer possible ways to help prevent and treat cancer, says Bevin Engelward, an MIT professor of biological engineering and senior author of a Jan. 15 PLoS Genetics paper describing the findings. “Chronic inflammation drives a...

My friend Michael Medved announced to listeners today that he is fighting cancer. I have known a bit longer, but because he is my friend and because he lives the healthiest of lifestyles, the news is still a shock. But here's the thing about Michael-he is the only one I know who could get a diagnosis like this and greet it with a smile. When he told me that he had cancer, it was immediately followed with the reminder that he was not a man to be pitied-he was not a victim. He intended to fight cancer and beat it,...

Radio host Michael Medved revealed on his website today that he was diagnosed with throat cancer last month. He writes, “I always knew that it would take something serious to keep me away from the microphone I cherish for an extended period of time. As it turns out, I am facing something serious. It’s called cancer." Medved was diagnosed with stage three throat cancer and said that it’s actually a highly curable form of cancer. And while he’d been able to keep his radio show going as he underwent treatment, Medved says he’s taking a leave of absence from his...

HARTFORD — The state Supreme Court ruled Thursday that a Windsor Locks teen is not legally mature enough to decide against life-saving chemotherapy. The unanimous decision, after a 75-minute hearing, upheld a lower court ruling that the state can force treatment for Hodgkin´s lymphoma on the girl, identified as Cassandra C. The state Department of Children and Families had been awarded custody of the child, who is "doing well" with chemotherapy at Connecticut Children´s Medical Center, a lawyer for the state told the justices. The court Thursday heard arguments from lawyers for Cassandra and her mother, Jackie Fortin, who supports

***SNIP*** Cassandra was taken into temporary custody by DCF in November, and her mother was ordered to cooperate with medical care administered under the agency’s supervision, after the hospital reported her to the agency. Cassandra underwent two chemotherapy treatments before running away from home. When she returned, she refused treatment. The teen’s doctors testified at a trial court hearing, after which it was decided that she was to be removed from her home and remain in DCF custody— and that DCF was authorized to make medical decisions on her behalf. ***SNIP*** “It’s a question of fundamental constitutional rights-- the right...

Plain old bad luck plays a major role in determining who gets cancer and who does not, according to researchers who found that two-thirds of cancer incidence of various types can be blamed on random mutations and not heredity or risky habits like smoking. The researchers said Thursday that random DNA mutations accumulating in various parts of the body during ordinary cell division were the prime culprits behind many cancer types. They looked at 31 cancer types and found that 22 of them, including leukemia and pancreatic, bone, testicular, ovarian, and brain cancer, could be explained largely by these random...

Richard Smith, who is chairman of the board of directors of medical smartphone app Patients Know Best, believes the opportunity to reflect on life before it ends is important. In an article published in The BMJ, the 62-year-old wrote that while most people tell him they would prefer a sudden death, he thinks that is very hard on the families of the deceased.'

Patrick McIntosh's wife, children and grandchildren think he's gone mad. His business clients think he's joking. And his doctors think he's lucky to be alive. Yet on Monday, despite the concerns of his family and bemusement of his colleagues, the businessman left home to trek to the South Pole – despite having been diagnosed with three unconnected cancers in less than a year. "It is perhaps a bit unusual," said Mr McIntosh, 58. "I've never done anything quite as mad as this. But I just want to get going." For the past few months, Mr McIntosh has been training hard...
