  • Big study casts doubt on need for many heart procedures

People with severe but stable heart disease from clogged arteries may have less chest pain if they get a procedure to improve blood flow rather than just giving medicines a chance to help, but it won’t cut their risk of having a heart attack or dying over the following few years, a big federally funded study found. The results challenge medical dogma and call into question some of the most common practices in heart care. They are the strongest evidence yet that tens of thousands of costly stent procedures and bypass operations each year are unnecessary or premature for people...

Bill Clinton: Europe a Mess Because of Migrants 11:57 AM, Mar 22, 2016 | By SHOSHANA WEISSMANN On Monday, former President Bill Clinton blamed disaster in Europe on migrants. He also seemed to suggest the migrants are causing Europeans to fear diversity. "Things are going better in America, the European Union is under terrible stress because of all those migrants that are coming there and the fights they're having within each other, many of them are moving to the right and becoming much more afraid of diversity even as we embrace it"

NEW YORK: In an embarrassment to presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton’s despondent campaign, an article has claimed that the aides of her husband, former President Bill Clinton, believe his 2004 heart surgery fundamentally altered his state of mind and that he is constantly in rage. The article to be published in Vanity Fair, and already posted on the magazine’s website also questions some of Clinton’s business dealings and behaviour since leaving the White House. “Old friends and longtime aides are wringing their hands over Bill Clinton’s postWhite House escapades, from the dubious (and secretive ) business associations to the media blowups...

World's first awake bypass surgery with valve replacement performed at Wockhardt Hospitals, Bangalore.    Another chapter in the history of heart surgery across the world was written in India by the Bangalore-based Wockhardt Hospital & Heart Institute, recently.   Dr Vivek Jawali, chief cardiovascular surgeon along with his team at Wockhardt Heart Institute have set a global benchmark by performing the first coronary bypass surgery along with an aortic valve replacement without using general anaesthesia or ventilator support while the patient was on a heart lung machine.   This is the first such reported case in the world of a twin heart...

Cardiac MRI tests confirm a dramatic 60% increase in patient’s heart function after procedure that combines coronary artery bypass grafting surgery with adult stem cell therapy. Bangkok, Thailand (PRWEB) April 27, 2006 -- Cardiac MRI tests confirm a dramatic 60% increase in patient’s heart function after procedure that combines coronary artery bypass grafting surgery with adult stem cell therapy. When 56 year old Thai businessman, Mr Sujin Lewwattanachotinan, underwent VesCell™ adult stem cell therapy in early July 2005 at Bangkok Heart Hospital he wasn’t expecting a miracle. Mr Lewwattanachotinan was a heart patient whose doctors had told him that there...

Experimental treatment makes 70-year-old a poster boy for science Mike Swendseid seemingly had run out of options in battling heart disease. The Grand Forks man had angioplasty. He underwent quadruple-bypass heart surgery. Inside him were four wires, two stents, a pacemaker and a defibrillator. "After the last stent, doctors told me there was nothing more they could do for Mike," said his wife, Marion. But, as science progressed, there was something. In January, the 70-year-old Swendseid became a recipient of experimental stem cell treatment at the Minneapolis Heart Institute, which is part of Abbott Northwestern Hospital. The treatment uses Swendseid's...
  • New Studies Question Value of Opening Arteries

A new and emerging understanding of how heart attacks occur indicates that increasingly popular aggressive treatments may be doing little or nothing to prevent them. The artery-opening methods, like bypass surgery and stents, the widely used wire cages that hold plaque against an artery wall, can alleviate crushing chest pain. Stents can also rescue someone in the midst of a heart attack by destroying an obstruction and holding the closed artery open. But the new model of heart disease shows that the vast majority of heart attacks do not originate with obstructions that narrow arteries. Instead, recent and continuing studies...
