President Barack Obama jumpstarted the holiday season Thursday, lighting the National Christmas Tree but also appealing to Americans to “come together as brothers and sisters†one day after 14 people were shot to death in Southern California. “This is of course the most wonderful time of the year, but we would be remiss not to take a moment to remember our fellow Americans whose hearts are heavy tonight, who grieve for loved ones, especially in San Bernardino, California,†Obama said.

Ben Carson is in serious political trouble, as his wacky and right-wing views on numerous issues draw more scrutiny and critical pieces of the “inspirational†back story he’s been telling for years get exposed as “fabrications.†A looming question now is what more of the political games of truth and consequences regarding Ben Carson is yet to be played. Nonetheless, it’s still worth exploring why Carson’s near lily-White base of supporters have found him so appealing. Conservative pundit Jonah Goldberg offers a partial – and revealing – answer why in a recent column praising the now retired neurosurgeon.

There is an embedded terror in the U.S., and it is not the boogie man or ISIS. It’s racism. Racism is often expressed through stereotypes, unsubstantiated judgments, discrimination and violence. Lately, racism has been portrayed by the very individuals sworn to protect the communities in this country, regardless of race, culture, sexual orientation or creed.

Chicago — It was just about a year ago. Michael Brown's body was left face down on a street in Ferguson, Mo., his bright red Cardinals cap lying beside him and police officers standing idly by. It was a deeply unsettling image. Combined with the stories of witnesses who said the unarmed black 18-year-old had attempted to surrender before being shot by a white cop, it reeked of a shameful history.

Once again, KFC has shown how far it is willing to go to incorporate chicken into everything we eat. The company introduced the "Chizza" via social media in the Philippines early in July saying, "Thick crust, thin crust. Don't think about it. We have our chicken as the pizza crust." Yes, that's right. KFC's signature chicken is now a pizza crust. This is not the company's first foray into hybrid foods. In 2010, KFC offered the Double Down sandwich, a bacon and cheese sandwich with two pieces of fried chicken as the bread. And let's not forget earlier this year,...

A groundbreaking study led by researchers from the University of Maryland College Park’s School of Health found Black mortality rates are much higher in areas with greater levels of racism. The study gauged the levels of racism across 196 media markets based on the volume of Google searches containing the “n-word” in each area. Researchers qualified that not all the searches were necessarily motivated by racism, but assumed “that areas with a greater concentration of these searches have higher levels of racism overall.”

We usually hate it when media speculate about whether a celebrity has had a nip or tuck, but it must be said: The Hamburglar has definitely had some work done. McDonald's on Wednesday brought the burger-stealing character back for a new advertising campaign for the first time in over a decade — and he looks nothing like the short, chubby, red-haired cartoon that we here at The Salt grew up with. Instead, he's now a tall, slim, stubble-faced dude sporting a fedora, trench coat and skinny-jeans. And it turns out he's also a suburban dad — a back story revealed...

"Saving Christmas," in which Kirk Cameron tries to convince his brother-in-law about the Christian meaning of the holiday, will win four of its six nominations: Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Cameron), Worst Screenplay, and Worst Screen Combo (Cameron and his ego). But "Transformers" is expected to win twice: Worst Director (Michael Bay) and Worst Remake, Ripoff or Sequel. That would bring the franchise to a total of five Razzies, after the three awards won by "Revenge of the Fallen" in 2009, including Worst Picture. Former "Transformers" star Megan Fox, who previously earned a Worst Actress bid for "Revenge of the Fallen,"...

WASHINGTON (AP) — White voters of all ages were less likely to back Democrats this year than in elections past, helping Republi5395a874abffae2b640f6a70670072dccans nationwide but most acutely in the South — and overpowering Democratic efforts to turn out their core supporters among Blacks and Hispanics. In a nation growing ever more diverse, political forecasters repeatedly warn Republicans they must improve their appeal among minorities in order to remain competitive in the long term.

Thousands of voters from across the nation reported problems with voting during this General Election, stemming not only from a rash of restrictive voting laws but also from the administrative deficiencies of an outdated voting system, according to the Election Protection coalition of civil rights groups. “Every election should be a celebration of democracy. Instead, what we’re hearing today from too many polling places around the country is that voters are having problems casting their ballots,” said Barbara Arnwine, executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, during a press call on Nov. 4. Some of the...

White voters are more likely to say they support voter ID laws if primed with a picture of an African American voting, versus a White person voting, or no picture at all, according to a recent study. In order to examine the way bias might play a role in support for voter ID laws, researchers with the University of Delaware’s Center for Political Communication conducted an online survey in 2012 of a nationally representative sample of 1,436 adults.

A major health issue that affects thousands of people each year is suicide, according to experts on the medical condition. “It is the third leading cause of death among African Americans ages 15-24. Even though we are killing ourselves fewer times at a lower rate, it’s a big concern as to why is it happening at younger ages,” he said.

Yes, you can go to Cuba legally. Yes, you can have your passport stamped. And yes, it’s safe there. These were just a few of the questions I was bombarded with before and after I went to Cuba in July. Going to Cuba for Americans is probably the easiest it has been in years. Under the Clinton and Obama administrations, travel restrictions have been eased.

A clown entertaining fairgoers at a Memphis event was fired for racial comments he made toward an attendee. According to Memphis NBC affiliate WMC, Tanya Jones of Atoka, Tenn. was visiting the Memphis Delta Fair with her three young children and extended family over the Labor Day weekend when they passed a dunk tank with a White clown attempting to entice passerby to play at the booth. While on the microphone, the unnamed clown said “Hey, nappy head.”
