Many years ago, I was with a crew of volunteers helping to clean up after Hurricane Hugo. There was no running water,no electricity, but destruction as far as the eye could see. The group of men I was with, were from many different States and backgrounds. We were clearing a road, using anything available to clear the mud and debris, wind blown pieces of vehicles, buildings, trees, and assorted dead things. It was late at night, working by the light of lanterns and vehicle lights to see the work area. At about 03:00, we decided to take a break and eat a meal. We had a cooler with some hot dogs and buns, some drinks and a few other necessities. We built a small campfire to cook the hotdogs and warm some water for coffee. Being miles from anywhere, we were surprised to see headlights carefully following the road we had cleared to this point. It was a plain car with GOV tags. The driver was well dressed man with polished shoes, nice jacket and tie. He began to shout at us and was spouting about regulations and code infractions. This went on for a few minutes before he wound down. I was receiving the brunt of this tirade, since I was closest to where he stood. I quietly said that we were not familiar with those codes, since most of us weren’t from this area; so could he put it in simpler words for me. He looked down his nose at me, and began a screaching again, about open fire, air pollution, and a few other things. Then he began demanding/ordering us to put out the fire. As he was waving his arms around and screaming at me, he didn’t notice that he had slowly become surrounded by the crew. His actions would be very well compared to the present day equivalent of a “Karen”. When he wound down again, I spoke to him quietly and said that if he had been a little more polite in his approach, I might have offered him a hot dog or something to drink. If he had approached us and struck up an adult conversation, we might have been able to understand each other and achieve a common goal, but he chose a different approach. I pointed out that he had very poor situational awareness. He then noticed being surrounded by men with different opinions that he had. As his face became pale, I pointed to a front end loader, and mused that it was very powerful and could probably dig a hole big enough to bury a car, in just a few minutes. I reminded him that all of us were from other States, and were here to help, but any of us could return home anytime and nobody would miss us or wonder why we left. And finally, I said that most of us were ex military and/or long experienced in Construction work. All of us have seen accidents and other unpleasant events. I then firmly suggested be get in his car and leave, because I was about to walk into the woods and take a little personal break. When I return, thinking of his safety, I would hate to find that he had suffered an accident or unpleasant event.
He abruptly left, we finished eating. One older machine operator made the most applied appt response to the situation, and it applies even more today.

As many have said, occasionally the ammo gods smile. Over the years I have been setting aside some ammo for the “just in case” possibilities. One weekend a lady at my church asked me if I could help her move some junk out of her garage. Mostly it was old yard tools, rusty mower, broken stuff. We uncovered an ancient aluminum ice chest. Thinking it would be light, I was surprised when it wouldn’t move. When I opened it, the smell made my eyes burn. It was FULL of colorful boxes and metal tins of .22s. From the boxes and brands, they were mostly from the 50s. Copper shells, not brass. She said those were left over when her husband closed his hardware store in 1965. She said if I could use them, take them. I did. Some friends that collect such things as old cartridge boxes were quite happy to accept almost untouched, full boxes, and some excellent trades were made. I might have put a few aside for just in case, too. They still shoot mighty fine.

My father once told me about his experiences with people from the North. He and his brother had a gas station in a part of what is now Cartersville GA. In the early 1930s there wasn’t much out of town traffic on the new 41 hiway, and a car from out of state was not very common. Back then some parts of the long road from up North were still rather undeveloped. My dad and his brother were leaning back in chairs against the front of the station, when a new car with Ohio plates pulled in. The pretty lady driver had the top down enjoying the warm day. My uncle got up and went over to the lady and asked what he could do for her. She needed some gas and then softly asked him a question. He didn’t understand the question, so he leaned into the car and asked her to repeat it. She asked him again, just a little slower and louder. My uncle was not used to hearing much of the Northern dialect, and interpreted her question as, “ did he have a whisk broom? “ He assumed she wanted to dust out the interior of the car. When he said, “no maam I dont, but if you will drive around the side of the building, I can take the Air hose and blow it out for you.” She got a shocked look on her face and drove away quickly.
After about an hour of discussion my dad and uncle decided she might have been asking about a Rest Room.

I was opening some old storage cabinets in the basement and came across some boxes of .22s that still have the Kmart sticker on them, don’t know how long I have had them, but 88 cents for 50, has been awhile.

I have just one question that should be asked. If all these votes for Biden are real votes from real voters, then why aren’t the Senate and House seeing dozens of newly elected Democrat members? I just can’t imagine all these people voted Biden and then Republican on the down ballot choices.

The correct response to the author of this book, is for everyone entering a bookstore that displays this book, to
“loot” all the copies of the book. Your defense is to say that the author convinced you that is correct behavior. I am sure the author will understand when the publisher stops payment on the check for writing the book.

When will someone in the press ask them why they have such a small representation of people of color? They don’t look like ANY professional basketball, football or baseball team when you look at the team pictures. In fact most of the pics of this team, all I can see is an arm or leg of color as all the non color girls stand in front. So, just how “woke” are they?

I have recently turned 65, and it is very true that there is little opportunity beyond “Welcome to WalMart” where I live. The company I worked for until six months ago, began to find fault with everything I did, and eventually terminated me. EEOC determined that I was terminated without reasonable cause. But it will take two years and numerous legal events before we get this settled. I was there for years, about a month before I was pushed out, I found their ad for my position on a national job site. They replaced me for about a third on my salary. I kept my eye on their ad, since then. It has run about every three to six weeks since I left there. An old friend there said they can’t keep anyone in the position, either they can’t do the work reliably or they leave for a better job.
In the last few months I have had many prospects, but when the interview comes... Not interested. I even got halfway through new employee orientation with one employer, and one day in the classroom, one of the bosses walked in, looked around, and the next break, I was informed of a problem with my paperwork, and asked to wait for a callback that never came. Just to be clear, out of the 49 people in the group, I was the ONLY White Male.
In the long run, I suppose it is better that I won’t live long enough to see how this will eventually destroy everything that used to hold the World together. Experience, knowledge, and skill, will be replaced by “systems” that no one will know how to repair, and what to do when they fail. A lot of skill and knowledge from befor computers and automation is being lost, and it will be a lot harder to relearn in the future.

I am sure that ALL the restaurants that advertise in this paper will increase their ad buys, NOT! In fact if they see even the smallest reduction in business compared to this time last year, they should sue for major damages. ANYONE in the area that has the least bit of food related distress, should bring a suit against the paper.. Do the Editors have no idea of their responsibility to the safety of the community?
